"I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
-Albert Einstein
Dear A.J. - I am so glad you have a boundless imagination! Daddy and I have always appreciated the arts, and made it a point to expose you to music, art, and theater. Your abstract artwork as a preschooler was wonderful and intricate. Your use of color and intricate design was always amazing to me. I loved the stories you had for what these designs were. When realistic art was the norm in school, you began to dislike art class. What a shame. Until last summer, you avoided art completely. Somehow, you selected a summer class that was called Super Sculpture. You loved it and began to have fun in the process again. When your school encouraged you all to try the different string instruments available to play as a 4th grader, I was elated and a bit surprised that you independently selected to participate! Daddy waited for you to convince him that you would practice and uphold your end of the year-long commitment. The first week you had your cello at home you started making up your own melodies as you would practice the notes you had learned at school. I knew you were hooked when you could find peace from that free flowing imagination of yours. This vivid imagination spills over into your battles and your speculations as to what could happen next in the books we read together. I know you are good in your studies (and quite brilliant in math). I know you see things that others do not – in the way the world works, how things are solved, winning moves of chess pieces, and reading other people’s nonverbal communications. Your skill in these areas is great, but I have so much pleasure in knowing that you appreciate the arts, as well as the concrete. It will make you so much more than you would be otherwise. I believe it helps you in unexpected ways too - like the confidence boost we’ve noticed!
