Journaling:
I joined the Junior League at the end of 2008, and it is amazing how much being part of the organization has changed my life. “Giving back” in this way is amazing - not only does it give a sense of accomplishment like nothing else, allow me to meet new people and make friends, but more importantly, I can see that I’m actually making a difference in people’s lives. I have learned so much about the needs of my community,
region and state... I’ve come face to face with startling stats for the number of homeless people, absued children, and people in need in my area... and I’ve learned about important, although not as severe or desperate, situations that warrant attention.
I’ve shopped for families in need of basic supplies after house fires, handed out healthy snacks and information about healthy living to children, raised money for breast cancer research and aided in breast cancer awareness, helped get hat and coat
donations for local shelters, aided in a warm pajama drive to collect pajamas for children in need, put together kits with basic hygiene necessities to donate to a local mental hospital, helped raise money for books for local schools, donated items to local nursing homes, shelters and food pantries, shopped for winter clothing and Christmas gifts for children in need,
aided in increasing awareness of domestic abuse cases in our area... the list of projects and causes goes on and on.
But at the end of the day, the list of projects that I have helped with isn’t at all important. The fact that I am giving back to my community... that I am undeniably helping change lives - that is what’s important. And it feels so good.
