Emma-Lynn is my daughter’s name. She was named after her maternal great-grandmother Lynav Hayes, who was called Lynn her whole life, and her paternal great-great-grandmother Emma Greek. I never knew my great-great grandmother Emma. I have few photos of her. She came from Germany and moved to South Dakota. She had eleven children. Emma means “whole” or “universal”. I remember my Grandmother Lynn well. I visited her almost every summer as a child. She was always singing and humming church hyms and was the BEST cook in our family. Grandma Lynn died in 1999 and never met the great-great grandchild who shares her name. My daughter has her copper colored hair. She loves to sing just like her great-great grandmother. Lynn means lake. So, Emma-Lynn together is “whole”, “complete”, “lake”. Emma-Lynn makes our family whole and complete but I’m not sure where “lake” comes in yet. Maybe she’ll grow up to love water or swimming or boating? We will have to wait and see what other traits she has inherited from these two women.
