Journaling Reads: The day finally arrived. The day, that truthfully, I’ve been dreading for the last year or so. The reason that I was dreading it was because that it meant a new chapter had arrived. Our days of hanging out and going and doing whatever we wanted during the day were going to be a lot more limited now. We can’t just pick up in the middle of the week and go to the zoo or the arboretum to beat the crowds and enjoy the day. Now, we’ve got to get up every morning and get you to school. It also means a shift for me. I need to think about going back to work even though I’m perfectly content to stay home. I never lack for things to do, but I do probably need to start contributing to the family’s income again. So, there was a lot on my mind on your first day of Kindergarten. You were excited. Your teacher, Mrs. Davis, had given you an envelope to open on your first day of school. Your Dad went to work early, and then came back home so we could all go to school together that first day. When he got home you opened the letter and your Dad read it to you. Then it was time to go. You are so open to new experiences that you seemed to have no anxiety about going to school. We went to your classroom and found your seat and talked to your teacher. We got you all set up and then it was time to go. I got a goodbye kiss-that probably won’t happen much longer, and then we left. I stayed busy all day and somehow managed not to cry. I was very happy to go pick you up that afternoon. You’d had a great first day and even won an award in music class. A few days later you told me, “you know mom when you drop me off at school by myself, that’s a really long time, and I miss you.” I know, and I miss you too sweetie.
