Journaling:We went to Valley West Mall looking for sandals for Gus at Stride Rite and had planned to run in and out. The kids asked if they could see the Easter Bunny. They clearly were not dressed for the occasion and Ella had not even combed her hair for the day but we decided to let them visit the bunny. I snapped this photo with my iPhone. The girls (age 8) still wholeheartedly believed in the Easter Bunny. Gus (age 3) gave the Bunny a hug and then shouted “Mom, there’s a dude in the bunny. The bunny is not real”. Daddy scooped up the girls and took off for the escalators and I grabbed Gus and tried to quiet him down before all the other kids could hear. He was adamant that there was a dude in the bunny! Before we could make it to the escalators he explained to me that “its just a man who went to his closet and put on his bunny clothes and drive in his car to the mall. The bunny is not real. Right Mom? Right Mom?”. I finally had to tell him he was right. Then he told me “God can see us but we can’t see him. Maybe the real bunny is up with God but that is not the real bunny”. I told him not to tell Sisters because it would make them sad. He agreed not to tell sisters or any kids at preschool. Gus and I met the rest of the family in the van and he shouts out “Avey Ella, the Easter Bunny is not real. There’s a dude in the bunny” Ava and Ella were of course devastated at the thought. The girls then laughed it off and said “isn’t it funny that he thinks there’s a dude in there”. Maybe were are safe for another year? I doubt it.
