I’ve liked this song for as long as I can remember. Karen and I had the record (yes, vinyl) of The Muppet Movie and we listened to it a lot when we were kids. I will always picture a green frog sitting in a swamp strumming a banjo and signing when I think about this song. I didn’t realize until recently that over 25 other artists have recorded the song including The Carpenters, The Dixie Chicks, Justin Timberlake, and Willie Nelson. My newest memory of this song was from the Standing Stones campout that we went on a couple of weeks ago. We were sitting around the campfire Saturday night singing all sorts of songs. This was one that I started and sang with Lisa Levi and a few others. I never thought too much about the lyrics, but I guess the song is about looking for a deeper meaning during our age of disenchantment. Yes, there is more to the world than what we can see and touch.
