In January 9th, 1964 a group of Panamanian High School Students went through the Panama Canal Zone demanding to hoist the Panamanian flag head to head with the US flag at the Balboa High School as the law demanded. But when they arrive people didn't allowed them and ripped appart the flag. The US military forced them out of the area and 22 Panamanians died. The picture of the militay shooting the unarmed student went to cover of Life Magazine and the president Roberto Chiari became the first Latin American President cutting off relations with the US. Britain and France solidarized with our people an took the case to de United Nations. Those were the first steps that later on lead the US to make a treaty to give back the Panama Canal to their rightful owners. Fifty Years Later, the original flag has been restored and is display on the Panama Canal Museum
