Leaving home was bittersweet for me. I was 20 years old when I moved out of my mom's house and into a townhouse with my fiancé. I thought I was ready to leave. I was in love and ready to get my life with him started. I'll never forget the first night in the new apartment. I was unpacking some things and I just burst into tears. All of a sudden I had this overwhelming desire to be back at home with my mom. To be 12 years old again, where the comforts of home were like nothing else in the world. I know you have to grow up eventually, but that first time leaving home can be so hard. I look at the events that played out shortly after we moved in. We got married later that year. Three months after we got married, he started cheating on me and by the time we had lived in the apartment for 1 year, we were divorced. Such a drastic change. It's no wonder, I had such a strong desire to be home. Maybe it was something in my heart that I couldn't quite hear yet that was telling me that home was the place I needed to be - where I should have stayed. I know had I not moved out, things may not have worked out the way they did. Sure, I might have been spared the heartbreak of infidelity and the shattering of a relationship that I thought was forever, but I might not have ever met Nate. I'm so thankful that I did experience everything during that time, because it's made me appreciate so deeply what I have today with my best friend and soul mate. He makes me so thankful that I did leave home, even when I didn't think I was ready.
