JOURNALING:
On April 14, my sister and I attended a baseball game at our old alma mater, The Ohio State University. We'd read a story about the Buckeyes' 15-1 trouncing of the Akron Zips earlier in the month during which two of their freshmen players, shortstop Henry Kaczmar and utility player Matthew Graveline EACH hit three-run homers. Graveline was leading the team with a .358 batting average. Since the weather forecast was calling for the warmest evening of the young spring season, we thought it would be a fun evening.
Our seats were right behind the home-side dugout and I was sitting next to Branden Graveline, Matt's dad, so it was fun to hear his stories of coaching his son as a kid just starting to play the game. Matt would have a walk and a base hit during the game, but he also struck out twice. Henry had gotten the Buckeyes on the scoreboard with a 4th inning homer and had doubled in two runs in the 7th.
Unfortunately, the University of Maryland Terrapins had scored 7 runs by the time we got to the bottom of the 9th inning. But, the Buckeyes mounted a comeback. Right fielder Mitchell Okuley doubled in 2 runs to make the score 7 to 5. Unfortunately, after two more runners got on base, and with two outs, center fielder Trey Lipsey struck out to end the excitement, and the game.
