Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day? Those are the opening words of a song Alan Jackson performed following the events of September 11, 2001. We were living on Wright-Patterson AFB at the time, still settling in from our move from Arizona in August. That morning We were taking our cat to the vet. It was one of the few mornings that Sean hadn’t had the TV on to CNN or Fox News. I remember turning on the radio when we got into the car and hearing that a plane had flown into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. When we got to the vet clinic, the SP turned us away saying that it was closed, so we went back home. Thank goodness the vet clinic was on the same part of base as our house, because the gates were all closed by then and we wouldn’t have been able to get home for quite a while. We turned the TV on when we got home and I remember watching in horror as the second plane hit and the towers collapsed. I didn’t realize then just how much that event was going to change my life. In the days after the attacks I was a little numb, as were many of our neighbors, but then we started to regroup and come together as a community. It was as if we weren’t going to let the terrorists win. Since we were both in the military it was more a question of when, rather than if, one or both of us would be called to serve overseas in response to the attacks. As it turned out, I was the one who got the call first and deployed with my National Guard unit to Kuwait in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
