Journaling:
Real life is living with two people that have been diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s a hard thing to live with. Am I supposed to go along with the way they want to have everything? I did for years and years. I “learned” to fold the towels the right way. I “learned” to place the clothes in the drawer in the proper order (all layered in the order they would be worn). I “learned” that the mayo & mustard couldn’t touch the cheese in the sandwiches. I “learned” that one person in my family can’t touch clean dishes with dry hands, can’t dry off with a towel, felt the need to wash their feet after getting out of the shower multiple times before bedtime. I allowed them to get upset and take their frustrations out on who ever was in their paths. I never understood how they could believe in superstitions, like if they didn’t do something a certain way, something bad would happen. I no longer allow their lives to control the rest of the family. I enabled them for years, probably making it worse for them and for the rest of us. I now try to make them deal with it in a normal way. I am finally doing things the way I like to. It’s OK if everything isn’t in it’s proper place. It’s OK if the glass cups are on the same shelf as the mugs. It’s OK for the cheese to touch the mayo in a sandwich. One day, I hope my life is not ran by the OCD of others. I can only hope for a magic cure for both of them. Counseling and medication will help take the edge off, but unfortunately, it’s not a cure all for this monster in our house. I will always be supportive, but I have decided not to be an enabler regarding this disorder. I can have a life, too!
