Journaling (from FB): As I was on the huge swing at the Fair today with my two oldest boys, it really struck me in the gut how OLD they're getting. They're both tall and lanky and big enough to go on most of the rides. Old enough to run ahead of me and get in line, walk all day (not without some complaining though) and too old to hold mom's hand.
My breath caught when Karsten looked back at me for a moment on the ride and smiled his biggest, most authentic smile and just for a moment, I saw the little toddler I chased all over, throwing tantrums and demanding things to be his way. My little dictator who ran the world and had everyone wrapped around his finger. I looked over at Josiah and instead of the huge 6 and a half year old who's all arms and legs, there was my tiny, smiley baby who loved nothing more than to be on his Daddy's shoulders and in his mommy's arms.
And then it was gone as fast as it happened and in their place were 6 and 8 year old kids. One's over halfway to driving and the other is very undeniably no longer my little baby. I realize that 6 and 8 is nothing in the grand scheme of things and that pretty soon they'll be 16 and 18 instead and I'll have the same nostalgia for the age they're at now, but they just seem so darn old.
I never thought I'd miss the days when I had 2 toddlers running around and driving me crazy, but oh if I could go back then with what I know now, I would hug those boys a little tighter and be more thankful for those sleepless nights, stressful days, and little diapered butts.
I think I'll hug Finn a little tighter tonight
