Who I am to my daughter....
Mom,
I see you as the brave woman that raised me mostly by herself. You knew that against all the odds, someway and somehow, you would give me the life you wanted. You worked hard day in and day out to give me the best education and the most opportunity of life. You could have given up, but you did not. Because of you, I know what it means to be a strong woman.
I see you as my biggest (and loudest!) cheerleader. From my first track meet to my last colorguard performance, I know that I have you leading my fanclub in loud cheers. Butterflies still enter my stomach each time I enter the stage, but the second I hear your unmistakable “Woo! Let’s go, Amyyyyy!,” I can’t help but smile. The motivation you give me has enabled me to explore new passions and reach heights I never dreamed possible.
I see you as a wise and insightful person; if I ever need advice, I place the most trust in your opinion. Most parents tell their children that they are flawless and believe they can do no wrong. We both know that I have my slip ups – and you aren’t afraid to correct me. If I don’t perform well or make a wrong decision, I can depend on you to correct me. You give it to me “real,” and that’s a quality that is few and far between. You acknowledge my talents, but at the same time help me fix shortcomings. You let me grow, you let me learn from mistakes, and you let me be my own person.
I see you as a role model. I have always looked up to you and aspired to live like you do. I used to comb through your Lucy doll’s hair and dream of the day that I too would go to St. Lucy’s. You wanted to be a nurse, and now that is a major I wish to pursue. I remember sitting next to you scrapbooking, sticking random stickers to a paper pretending my masterpiece was as gorgeous as yours. I hope one day I am as hard-working as you. I hope I can deal with life’s troubles and curveballs with the grace that you do. I hope I am as smart, independent, caring, and loving as you are.
Lastly, I see you as my best friend. From day one, it was me and you, traveling through life singing to U2 and ABBA in your gray Nissan. I remember cuddling in your room and watching either Powerpuff Girls or Runaway Bride. Today nothing has really changed: we still sit on the couch and watch all our TiVo shows we have no time to see during the week. I love telling you about my day over some fresh chiles guerritos or just on a midnight drive to McDonald’s. Sometimes we disagree, but at the end of the day I see you as my super mom. I appreciate everything that you do for me, even though I know it may not be easy. I love you so much mommy.
