Journaling - Memories in a box.
Years & years of recipes. Handwritten. Typed. Clipped. Folded. Noted. Changed.
3x5 cards filled with glimpses of years gone by.
These are my grandmother’s recipes. Recipes that I inherited after her passing in October 2008. They are dated for the most part. As the years progressed, so did my grandmother. Her confident script became shaky and illegible at times. There are recipes dated as recently as 2006. This melts my heart knowing that grandma failed fast. That she was pretty much baking and cooking until she no longer could.
There are recipes in here that held a special place in my heart. Recipes that were Holiday Traditions – like her wine sauce. Which one year she had no wine so she made rum sauce instead - using the same amount of rum as wine. (That was some potent sauce!) Recipes that I remember back from childhood, like her potato chip cookies, gingersnaps, rhubarb custard. Recipes that I remember baking with her on the rare nights I spent at her home. And of course there are recipes in here that I won’t dare make my family.
I’m not a cook. I’m not one to slave in the kitchen for hours. I am all about quick and easy and fast. I’ve got too much to do & too little time to do it in. I know that I won’t be using these recipes often. Then why do I keep them out on top of my stove?
Because it is the memories.
Those two little boxes hold generations of memories.
And most importantly bits of my grandmother.
I hope that I can add my own little notes to these precious treasures.
I hope that my girls and maybe their children will look at these recipes with the same look of love in their eyes. I hope these boxes will hold memories for them, too.
Because one day – my recipes will be added to these boxes. My handwriting will be on these cards.
