When my Sister-in-law Arainna found out
she was expecting her second child it was a
joyous occasion. She never thought she
would be able to have any children let alone
excepting her 2nd. Things don’t always turn out
the way we would hope they would. It wasn’t
long after finding out she was expecting that she
started losing feeling in her arms and began
slurring her speech.. This came as a great concern
to her and the rest of the family. Her mother had
just recently had a stroke due to PFO ( a defect in the wall
between the two upper chambers of the heart) and a blood
disorder called Factor V Leiden. Arainna went in
to be tested for both of these and found out that she
indeed had them and that it was BAD and would require
surgery right away or she could possibly die from
having another stroke which her MRI showed in-fact
she had had. The tests and surgeries however could
make her lose her new pregnancy. The Dr.’s even told
her she would be better off if she just terminated the
pregnancy for her own health issues. Devastated and
not wishing to end her pregnancy Arainna went through
all the testings without any type of sedation used to do
the esophageal echo to determine how large the hole in
her heart actually was. After finding out it was “worst case
scenario,” they told her she must wait until at least her 2nd
trimester to undergo the surgery to fix her heart. Terrified
she would lose her baby she took all the medications and twice daily shots in the stomach to keep her blood from clotting and made it to her 2nd trimester where she did have the surgery to fix her heart, miraculously she and her baby survived the ordeal and she delivered a healthy baby girl via c-section on December 18th 2003.
