Journaling: In the fall of 1996, I transferred to OBU as a sophomore and Joel Turner entered as a freshman. Although I knew who he was, we never really hung out in the same circles. In the spring of 1997, I suggested to Joel that he call me over summer vacation since he was going to be living close by, but when he didn’t, I didn’t think about about him again. I spent that fall semester consumed with the swim team...morning practice started at 5:45, so I would come home in theeee afternoons after practice and crash till about 10 about 10 pm and then hang out with my friends. Unbeknownst to me, Joel Turner was also hanging out with my friends, but by the time I got up from my “nap” he was already gone. It wasn’t until our season ended in December we found ourselves hanging out with my friends at the same time. That Sunday night I was frantically writing a paper and needed a break. So I went over to Meri’s house, where Joel was getting his haircut. “Joel Turner, you should come talk to me before you go home,” I said, and that is what he did. For almost four hours we sat in my apartment talking, and when he found out I wanted to live overseas after I graduated, he said, “Me too! We should get married!” I can remember thinking about it for a sec before I said, “Sure!” So we spent the next month telling people that we were just going to skip the dating part and get married, and we might just have really done that had Joel not had another year and a half of school left. We officially started dating that January, and by the time summer arrived, we were pretty love sick. But we were both spending the summer overseas, and we knew that if our love survived the summer apart, then we would never be apart again. Sure enough, that summer was total agony for me, and when I stepped off that plane in August and saw his face, I knew this love was for keeps.
