Most folks think of the unknown or bad experiences when you mention the word FEAR. For me it’s not that I don’t know how or what to do, it’s that I’m anxious about the outcome. And bad experiences haven’t happened to me in a long time, at least not in the venues I’ve been frequenting lately.
I have a dream of speaking in front of large audiences eloquently – about some of my favorite topics (project management, risk management and scrapbooking are just a few of the topics that hold my interest right now). And I would love to be acknowledged for my “ahem” expertise. And even though I have been teaching adults for almost 15 years, I still have some of those fears that come with public speaking. Like forgetting my next thought, or tripping as I take my place on stage, or heaven forbid that I fall off the stage!
After all, speaking to a group of 5 or 6, or even 20 people in one room about a process or topic that I know intimately is easy. At least to me it seems easy. But 100 or 150 folks is another thought altogether. But I’m getting closer. You see, two years ago I joined an organization to help me overcome this fear I have.
And this week, I had two opportunities to step outside of the box. Joining this organization has opened doors and helped me to spread my wings. Thank you, Toastmasters International, for pushing me out of the nest!
