Journaling: I don't know if you realize how lucky you are to still have your eye, much less be able to see from it with perfect vision. And I'm pretty sure you don't know how angry I still get when I think about how you almost lost it. The summer you were 14, your two best friends, Joe and James came to spend three weeks with us, and it was a long three weeks. You are all good boys, but at the time there wasn't a lick of common sense between the three of you. You were restless, not used to living in a small town and looking for something to do. That you choose to have a be-be gun battle should not surprise me, but it did. That James was a good enough shot to hit you dead center in your left eye still does. If your eye were a target, he would have had a perfect bulls eye. I guess you thought a pillow was a good shield, but even the best shield does not work when you drop it. First it was a trip to the emergency room where they told us that although the be-be did not penetrate your eye, it damaged your lens and was causing you to loose pressure in your eye. Honestly, I didn't know what it all meant, but when they sent us immediately to the eye surgeon, I had enough sense to be scared. By the time the doctor was able to see us, almost 8 hours had passed and it looked like you were sleeping in the exam chair. Your grandmother started to scold me a bit for not watching you boys closer and I got so angry. I remember telling her that I could not stop you from being stupid, reckless and completely irresponsible, and that at 14 I should not have to hold your hand. At that moment the Doctor came in and you sat up. When he asked you what had happened, you replied "Apparently, I was stupid, reckless and completely irresponsible and he said, "Yep that sounds about right, but you are also lucky because you are going to get to keep that eye." I think you grew up a little that day. Funny how almost losing an eye will do that
