Journaling reads:
Reading has always been a huge part of my life. In elementary school I first discovered that books can transport you to whole new places and experiences. This was a dream come true for a painfully shy, suburban kid like me. There were two books that stand out vividly in my memory from those years. One was the Wolves of Willoughby Chase. Our third grade teacher, Mrs. McKay, would read us books to quiet us down when we came in from recess. We would sit with the lights off utterly engrossed in and enthralled by the story of the poor girl sent to the horrible orphanage with no hope for escape because of the wolves and wilderness beyond (she did, of course, escape and live happily ever after!). The other book was Pippi Longstocking, which was the first book I remember taking from the school library and reading on my own. Pippi was everything a kid wanted to be -- wild, crazy, the owner of cool pets like a monkey. The ability to read stories like those felt like a precious treasure to me then, and it still does.
