My dad loved working puzzles. When I was growing up we didn't have much time to work them except at Christmas. Christmas Eve was always a time that we would get a puzzle out to work together. I have many fond memories of just the two of us staying up late into the night working on a puzzle together after everyone else had gone to bed. I'm not sure why, but Clash of the Titans was usually on the TV after the musical Christmas programs had finished for the evening. Odysseus battling the Gorgon and Cyclops in all of its stop-motion glory kept us company quite a few years. It was our quiet time together, just the two of us before Santa arrived to fill the stockings and leave his special gifts for everyone.
Daddy loved working really challenging puzzles, ones that would take days or even sometimes weeks to finish because the pieces were all the same shape, or it was swirls of color, or nothing but a sea of silver foil wrapped Hershey's kisses. But there wasn't a puzzle he didn't like to work. He would bring new puzzles for the kids whenever he came to visit, and he always made sure that he helped work them, because working puzzles with someone is the best way.
Now that he is gone, we continue the tradition of working a puzzle together on Christmas Eve (or sometimes another day depending on the calendar of events). We will put on a familiar movie and sit and piece it together while chatting and catching up. Elizabeth and I are usually the most persistent workers, but everyone usually stops and finds a piece or two to place during the course of the assembling period.
