journaling: WhooOOOO, whoooOOOOO! These hoots tormented me in high school. I wore eyeglasses that had large frames and a group of boys in my class decided I looked like an owl. Whenever they saw me, they'd hoot and laugh hysterically at their own cleverness. I could be innocently walking to class and my mood would be shattered by "whooooooo, whooooOOOO." They teased me at school and beyond. I remember being at the mall and hearing them. The worst time was when we were all on a bus. I couldn't escape and there was a full busload of my schoolmates witnessing my red-faced embarrassment. Being singled out this way was mortifying to me. The teasing made me feel so self-conscious. I don't think I ever responded to these boys; I would just ignore them but seethe inside and
fantasize about torturing the ringleader. One would think that I would hate owls now but I am actually drawn to them. Now, more than 20 years later, I look
back on this humiliation and realize that it could have been much, much worse. They could have been barking.
