Sometimes, it feels like every single bit of me has been absorbed and shattered by this illness. Like I only exist as a substrate for this thriving disease to feed on. Its sharp edges gouging me with every movement, every thought of everything I wish that I could do. During my last flare, I began to feel sorry for myself that I could do little more than sit up in bed. And then I couldn't even do that. I remembered how great it is to be able to sit up, to look out my window, to create a bit, to read a bit, to write a bit. It IS the small victories and the reminder to be thankful for every single one. This poem has helped me immensely.
Perhaps, even here, I am growing
when the days are long &
I do not feel as strong &
when the hours go by slower
than they ever have before,
& the sun is shining
& I am lost indoors,
Perhaps even here,
I am growing...
learning to be at peace
in what does not make sense to me.
Perhaps, even here, I am growing.
So I will inhale & exhale.
It is well. It is well.
Everyday is a part
of the story I will tell.
I am free to breathe here,
free to be here,
free to be at peace
when nothing makes sense here,
because perhaps...
even here I am growing,
