No, you're not seeing things - that is, in fact, a full-grown Golden Bernedoodle in a formal ballgown. I'm not sure if I'm incredibly proud or thoroughly embarrassed to admit that I designed and created that dress, from scratch, without a pattern, all in a weekend while visiting my Mom and Dad. You see, they're teaching a class or two at the annual Lone Star Santas Round-Up. Saturday night is a formal dinner, and since Lani is Mom's service dog, she will be there. Mom decided she wanted to have Lani dressed appropriately, so she ordered stretch velvet, sequin mesh fabric, and tulle. And since I was going to visit the weekend before the conference, she asked if I was up to whipping something up. Well, my goal was to make new memories this weekend in advance of Mom's surgery later in the month, so why not? I packed up my Bernina and my serger and all the supplies I can't live without and poor Jim managed to get everything to fit in the Prius. Three days and one trip to JoAnn's later, Lani now has a dress with a stretch velvet bodice, sequin waist- and neckband, and a 3-tiered skirt made of 5 yards of tulle, trimmed in glittery ribbon. What blew my mind the most was how much Lani enjoyed the fitting process! She'd hop right up on her grooming table and patiently put her head through, one arm, then the other, and one leg and then the other in the garter-style elastic bands I made to hold the skirt in place. Every time we were done, she gave me sweet kisses, and the fitting we did when the skirt was attached, she immediately jumped off the table and pranced into the living room to show off her dress to Daddy and Jim. I couldn't stop laughing! She is SUCH a princess! I almost couldn't get her back on the table to let me take it off. There are lots of people who will say this was utterly ridiculous, but Lani is going to bring so much joy to so many people the night of the event. And besides, it makes my Mom so very happy. And that's all that really matters!
