RQOTD - Do you double dip?
I was watching Good Morning America this morning and they were talking about double dipping and I had to think hard as to whether or not I do. If I'm eating chips and salsa, I always break the chip in half before I scoop. If I'm eating carrots and ranch/guacamole, I always flip the carrot over before dipping again. I only do this though if I'm eating off of my own plate. If I dunk from a shared bowl I'll just eat the whole carrot without dipping again.
So, be honest. Do you double dip?

I do double dip occasionally if the dip is all mine, or if I'm only sharing it with DH (like at a restaurant) and I know I'm not sick. But otherwise I'm pretty militant about no one double dipping in a shared setting! The kids are horrible... they not only double dip but dip, lick, dip! Ewwww. I'm way too much of a germaphobe to handle that.

I only double dip if it's my own personal dip, or like Brook, if I am sharing with my husband or family. In a group setting, never. I just make sure to load up whatever I'm dipping with enough dip to cover the whole thing on one try!

I don't double dip in any community food and it bothers me when I see others do it! I called out a co-worker once -- he had a cold, so it made me extra feisty!

If I ever saw someone double-dip I'd gag. I watched a report once where they took one dish that people double-dipped from and one where they didn't, and left them to sit for a couple days or something. The one that was double-dipped totally broke down because <shudder> there was saliva & stuff in it that starts digesting your food.
OMG, I'm about to puke thinking of it. |

If I'm sharing with others I don't double dip. But if it's just me I definitely will.

I'm like Carrie... I break off a piece of the chip or flip the carrot... I'm pretty hard core on that and watch my family like a hawk... Pretty easy with hubby, everything is like one bite for him... Haha... J is getting pretty good on not double dipping... Now the amount of dip the kid uses per chip, that is another thing...

At home where it's just me and my son and I'm not planning on saving any leftover dip - definitely yes.
In any other situation - definitely NO!

All the time if it's my own dip at home and as long as it is an amount that is going to be finished completely because even if it's just for me, storing anything after it has bacteria in it from saliva (even your own) is a breeding ground.
Anytime I'm sharing (even with my daughter) I do not double dip, ever. Cheyanne has always been very good about this too - she's more of a germaphobe than I am |

I only double dip on my own plate and wouldn't with a shared dip bowl. However, here is the truth behind the myth--- Mythbusters on Double Dipping

I was at a holiday party tonight and every time I went for a dip, I thought about this thread I realized there is rarely a need for me to dip twice. I'm actually pretty good about getting the right amount of dip on my first dunk, lol. You guys will probably think I'm neurotic, but turning an object around to dip is probably not significantly better than a true double dip, since in theory some of the bacteria/dirt on your fingers could be transferred to the dip ... though in reality, the likelihood that any of this behavior actually amounts to anything is pretty negligible

Only when I am eating with my family. Other time, I would scoop up some dip with a clean spoon to put on my plate.

It's all a wonder we haven't perished from some terrible double dipping disease by now!

I do not double dip because I do not care for dips, salsa, guacamole, etc. However there are a few things that I will eat like the cinnamon dip from The Pretzel Factory. With that said, I have my own container that no one else is allowed to use so it doesn't matter what I do with it!. Thinking about it, I believe that is about the only thing I dip.
I'm trying to teach my 2-year old NOT to double-dip because he's gross. Outside of him, I do not believe the rest of the family double-dips when there is a chance of double-dipping |

At home with my family ....um yes of course. We got the same germs!!! LOL
Out I usually take dip and put it on my plate. And actually depending on who's sharing this dip...I may not even eat it at all.....ROFL

And if you've seen the episode on germs/sneezing, you'd know you're way more at risk of catching something just from what everyone touches than double-dipping. That episode grossed me out way more. Last edited by Nettio; 12-06-2015 at 03:34 PM. |

I don't even like any buffet style meals because of people coughing, sneezing and they may not cover their mouth/nose properly. When I was working, I would get down to breakfast where I was first in line at the fruit bar. If I didn't see them unwrap it, I would just get something else where the cook would make it to order. All that said, I don't double dip and I give my daughter her own sauce. She does suspicious things with ranch and ketchup. Baby boy is seeming to be the same way since he just discovered dipping his food in sauce. |

Only if it is mine and mine alone. Otherwise, I just use the other edge of the chip or get enough for one dip.

Only if it's mine or sharing with hubs since we ahem, have shared saliva a time or 2 lol. I teach the kids not to double dip so I won't and hubs won't double dip in our family setting. They go to school and get germs and they are stinky kids haha.
So 98% no, 2% on the odd occasion that hubs will eat a dip at all - which is usally queso, yes. |

I double dip at home all the time. I do not care. So not a germaphobe.
I can't really remember the last time I was out/with other people and there was some kind of dip involved, but if there was, I would not double dip to be polite not because I cared abt double dipping itself or the germs that may or may not be involved. |

I guess I'm in the minority here, I don't double dip in a social setting just because it is not polite, and I am always concerned about offending other people.
But I truly do not care about double dipping or putting fingers in food or anything like that. I think of germs as my friends that help me from getting too sick. My kids know that they can't do the trick of licking food to keep me from eating something they want. LOL

ewww, no! It's all gross. Dips, salad dressings, cheese spreads, whip cream, etc! About the only thing I can stomach is peanut butter and grape jelly. The rest, can make me sick just thinking about it! My husband on the other hand feels the same way, "more for me!" but really, I don't buy it and it's never in the house so he doesn't get, period! I'm a mean wife. I should start buying it because we discovered while living with my parents this past year that my 11-year old likes salsa.

Germs don't really bother me. However, I will not dip from a bowl in public. I always put some on a plate or in a small cup and dip from that. I double dip all the time at home and it doesn't bother me at all. My kids and husband do it too. I have no problem with it. Like the Mythbusters segment that was linked to proved, there is more bacteria in what you are eating than double dipping creates anyway.

I don't double dip especially when it's a shared bowl, but what I do is get my own plate, scoop a couple spoonful and finish it. Except of course if I'm sharing with my husband only. I don't double dip in a jar as well, I always transfer a small amount in a bowl.

Oh I totally do if it is my own personal dip or salsa! If it is something someone else is sharing, no way
