Journaling reads: Every time I think about this I cry. I was a young mother and my two year old son wasn’t speaking at all and seemed different. He seemed to either have behavioral problems or he was deaf. A good friend and neighbor suggested that we take him for testing. He had hearing tests an MRI and even went though psychological tests. After a long drawn out time I found out he has a plaque on his brain which caused his delayed speech and even had my neurologist tell me point blank that he will never be “college material” whatever that meant. I was crushed. He is my first born and all my hopes and dreams were being thrown away by doctors. Luckily our school district had an early intervention program and on the day after his third birthday he was enrolled. He LOVED school. He got mad because he could not go on holidays and weekends. That was sixteen years ago. Today he is a high school senior excited about his pending graduation. He is in the National Honor Society, on the student council, is taking college level classes in high school, takes karate lessons and is a well known at his school; so well known that the principal knows him by name when he sees him in the hall. He is bright, smart, and a joy to be around. Oh and as for that doctor, I’d love to find him again after all these years and shoot him. He IS going to college and is as smart as a whip! He just needed some help at the start. I did not find out until he was twelve that he is autistic. He has high functioning Asberger’s Syndrome. He just has trouble dealing with people, but he has come so far. Am I heartbroken? Not anymore. I am thrilled beyond my wildest dreams!
