I went to college back before there were cell phones. Back then, there were only land lines in houses and businesses, and long distance phone calls (pretty much anywhere except your local city) were expensive. My underclass dorm had one wall phone for 100+ girls in the dorm lobby. I didn’t have money to make the long distance calls home. Fortunately, my parents had a business with a toll free (no cost to the caller) phone number.
When I wanted to talk to my mom, I would have to call during business hours using the lobby phone. It was impossible to hear with all the activity in the lobby, but the phone was fortunately situated right next to a door to a quieter area. I would dial the number, run the long stretched out curly cord under the door, close the door & then catch my mom up on what was going in my college life. I was luckier than most students of the time for sure!
