Journaling reads: Betty Van Leuwen and her mother lived next door to us. I remember well their German accents, their corgi dogs, Vip and Vickie, and the dollhouse Betty let me play with. She was kind to me, and looking at this picture brings back her voice, the smell of their house, the feel of the dogs nipping at my heels. I always wished for neighbors with children, but Betty was a friend to me, and I’m grateful.
