Blah. Jeff Update.
So. Jeff has been feeling REALLY crappy the past couple of weeks. He's been dizzy, weak, falling over when he stands up (which frankly, is incredibly bad on my nerves), not able to eat and just generally not good. They gave him some new medication last Friday and it helped a little bit but not enough. He has bruises everywhere from falling and he looks awful.. grey almost. Anyway.. he had chemo today and his blood counts are just bottomed out. He is very anemic, even though he's been taking iron pills. He's STILL not back to work (since March) and we're almost out of unemployment. So.. she has been suggesting a blood transfusion for a few weeks now and he's told her no every time. Today it was no longer a choice. She said without the transfusion he can't go back to work for another two months, and there's no way we can afford that. We can't afford for him to be home now
So... he gets a blood transfusion on Monday at 7:30. At least 2 units, maybe 3. PLEASE keep him in your thoughts.. he's pretty nervous about it but I really hope this helps him... this is wearing on me to be honest.. and it's worse on him I know, but man I'm so tired. Thanks guys.

Sara, I'm sorry to hear that you and your husband have to go through this. I haven't ever been through this with my husband, but only with my mom and my father in law (both had terrible cancer...). My father in law didn't want to have blood transfusions either, like Jeff though it got to a point that he no longer had a choice. Once he got the transfusions, he felt sooooo much better and he wondered why he waited so long, LOL! So, my hope for you and Jeff, is that he has the same feeling!
Good luck to you both!

Bless both of your hearts! I had four blood transfusions and platelets after having my twins. I was unconscious for the whole thing though. Best of luck!

Sara,
I had six transfusions following my second birth. It was not scary. They'll give him Tylenol and benedryl before he gets the blood. Then it's just like an IV but it's blood. Feels no different. Normally one unit takes three hours to get. Five of mine were done emergently so they took about three minutes each, hand pumped in. But my last one was a three hour one. I'd be happy to talk to him about it if it will help ease his worries.

I know how hard this can be -- we did not want to give Isaac a transfusion when he was sick with meningitis. We got to the point where the doctor said, I'm doing this because he needs it -- whether you like it or not. But I will say, looking back, it was the turning point in his recovery. His body had been fighting so hard, and this was just the boost he needed to get back on track. Try not to worry, and know that this is going to help his body to get stronger. (((hugs)))

Thinking of you both Sara and I really hope the transfusion helps a lot.
Like Alisa, I got six units after my first birth and without problems. Hopefully it will be a boost for Jeff's body. |

Wow, Majda, I never met anyone else who got as many as I did. Being that I know how bad off we had to be in order to get so many units, I am sorry to hear it. I'd be interested in comparing war stories if you want to PM me your birth story.
Sara, there was no option with me, I required all six units but I was very scared of the entire thing. My OB explained to me how when you are that bad off even one unit can turn someone from being critical to being OK. I bet Jeff gets some units and feels like a new man. When my Aunt had leukemia the transfusions made her feel so much better. And I'm totally convinced that I recovered as well as I did because six people took time out of their days to give the ultimate gift. So many hugs.

I had four blood transfusions back in 2008 and I felt SO much better afterwards! (The reason I kept having to have repeated transfusions was that my spleen was destroying the blood after they infused it, so it took a few tries to get it to "stick"). I was worried about it but I felt SO much better when it was over! I felt better quickly, too!
