Default If you could give a song...

...to your child, what would it be?
one song that they would hold onto and live out in their life? one song that kind of sums up all you are hoping for them in their future?

I'm trying to put together a few little hybrid projects, and since I'm stuck I thought I'd make a little book for each of my children with pictures of them to illustrate a song that sort of says all the things I want to say to them.

Leanne Womak's I Hope you Dance is one I'm thinking of for my daughter...
and Sara Groves Song for My Sons is one I'm thinking of for my son.

I was just wondering if anyone else had any other ideas of songs along this line...

I Hope You Dance has always been my song for my girls! It's so sweet! I don't have a song for my son yet; havent' really thought about it. My mom has songs for my brother and it. mine is "You cant always get what you want" byt the rolling stones, cause I always wanted everything as a kid, lol and still do! My brothers is "Simple Man" by Lynard Skynrd. I really like that one for him; its a good song.

The first one that popped into my head was Live Like You Were Dying, but then I was like...that's not really appropriate for an album. LOL! There's one by Martina McBride, new-ish... Do It Anyway. It's a really nice song, very inspiring.

There's a Christian song called Forever Young by Connie Scott that I want to use to create a similar type of album for my daughter.

I can't find the lyrics online right now but if you're interested, PM me and I'll look for the lyrics for you at home.

Its not really about what I want for them as much as what I feel from them but "I loved her First" makes me AND my husband cry every time!

And Toby Keith has a new one out "You're gonna miss this"

I want to do pages with both of those....eventually

I did one for my daughter -
"In My Daughter's Eyes" Martina McBride
I also did one for my son:
"My Wish" Rascal Flatts
And there is a beautiful song called "Help You Find Your Wings" by Mark Harris. This was played at my daughters Kindergarten Graduation last year while they played a slide show and you talk about boohooing. I still want to do a page with this song. It is my favorite and really sums up what I want my kids to know and how I feel.
Here are the lyrics:

It's only for a moment you are mine to hold
The plans that heaven has for you
Will all too soon unfold
So many different prayers I'll pray
For all that you might do
But most of all I'll want to know
You're walking in the truth
And if I never told you
I want you to know
As I watch you grow

I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I'm here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

May passion be the wind
That leads you through your days
And may conviction keep you strong
Guide you on your way
May there be many moments
That make your life so sweet
Oh, but more than memories

I pray that God will fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I'm here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

It's not living if you don't reach for the sky
I'll have tears as you take off
But I'll cheer as you fly

I pray that God would fill your heart with dreams
And that faith gives you the courage
To dare to do great things
I'm here for you whatever this life brings
So let my love give you roots
And help you find your wings

I used this one in my son's 2nd birthday DVD...

Handprints on the Wall by Kenny Rogers

The wait turned into hours
Before you came my way
The smile that filled a daddy's heart
On the special day
The moment left me speechless
I didn't know what to say
Then you took your first breath
That took mine away

Days go by so quickly
Summer turns to fall
Seems like only yesterday
That you began to crawl
So don't be afraid to take that step
I'll catch you when you fall
I don't mind if you leave behind
A few handprints on the wall

I can't describe this feeling
Way down deep inside
The itsy-bitsy spider
Was the first thing that we tried
Patty cake, the baker's man
With your hands so very small
You could always stay this young
And I wouldn't mind at all

Days go by so quickly
Summer turns to fall
Seems like only yesterday
That you began to crawl
So don't be afraid to take that step
I'll catch you when you fall
I don't mind if you leave behind
A few handprints on the wall

There is a song that I love by Plumb called "In My Arms" that she wrote after the birth of her first son...

your baby blues
so full of wonder
your curley cues
your contageous smile
and as i watch
you start to grow up
all I can do is hold you tight

knowing clouds will rage and
storms will race in
but you will be safe in my arms
rains will pour down
waves will crash all around
but you will be safe in my arms

story books are full of fairy tales
of kings and queens and the bluest skies
My heart is torn just in knowing
you'll someday see the truth from lies

when the clouds will rage and
storms will race in
but you will be safe in my arms
rains will pour down
waves will crash all around
but you will be safe in my arms

Castles, they might crumble
dreams may not come true
but you are never all alone
'cause I will always
always love you

when the clouds will rage and
storms will race in
but you will be safe in my arms
rains will pour down
waves will crash all around
but you will be safe in my arms
in my arms

The song itself just makes the lyrics even more wonderful. If you want to hear the song to get an idea of what the words sound like set to music, you can find it on Plumb's myspace page here... http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endID=12209297 (just be sure that you do the 2nd song down. The first seems to be a dance re-mix)

This was the mother/son dance song at a friend's wedding and since then I am keeping a mental note of it for my son's wedding. It was such a powerful moment watching them dance to it.

I LOVE that mark harris song

Butterfly Kisses is by Bob Carlisle and goes like this

Quote:
There's two things I know for sure:
She was sent here from heaven and she's
daddy's little girl.
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and
I thank god for all the joy in my life
Oh, but most of all
For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;
sticking little white flowers all up in her
hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."
"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."
In all that I've done wrong I know I must
have done something right to deserve a hug
every morning and butterfly kisses at night.
Sweet 16 today
She's looking like her mama a little more everyday
One part woman, the other part girl.
To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls
Trying her wings out in a great big world.
But I remember
Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking
little white flowers all up in her hair.
"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you
don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."
With all that I've done wrong I must have done
something right to deserve her love every morning
and butterfly kisses at night.
All the precious time
Like the wind, the years go by.
Precious butterfly.
Spread your wings and fly.
She'll change her name today.
She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.
Standing in the brideoom just staring at her.
She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not
sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."
She leaned over...gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."
"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"
Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have
done something right.
To deserve your love every morning and butterfly
kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.
I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember
every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.
and I've always wanted to do a whole album with that Natasha Beddingfield song "Unwritten"

Quote:
I am unwritten,
Can't read my mind
I'm undefined
I'm just beginning
The pen's in my hand
Ending unplanned
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten, yeah
Oh, oh
I break tradition
Sometimes my tries
Are outside the lines, oh yeah yeah
We've been conditioned
To not make mistakes
But I can't live that way oh, oh
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inner visions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live you life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
(Gospel)
Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words
That you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inner visions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live you life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live you life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten

I love the song unwritten! Its the basis of my albums! Like the first page of just my husband and I, then when my son is born its Today is where your book begins, the rest is still unwritten. Same with my daughter.

I love this song by Erin O'Donnell & it's a 'little kid' song:

'Hold On To Jesus'

You're a little piece of heaven
You're a golden ray of light
Ad I wish I could protect you
From the worries of this life
But if there's one thing I could tell you
It's no matter what you do
Hold to Jesus
He's holding on to you

The world will try to tell you
That might is more than right
That beauty's on the outside
And being good's a losing fight
But remember what I've told you
Because the world will make you choose
Hold to Jesus
He's holding on to you

Hold on to Jesus
Cling to His love
Rest deep in His mercy
Whenever things get rough
Don't lose sight of His goodness
And don't ever doubt this truth
That when you hold on to Jesus
He's holding on to you

Hear me dear Jesus
Rock this little one to sleep
Keep her close when she's scared
And give her grace when she is weak
I know she'll stumble
But I know she'll make it through
If you hold to her just like
You said You'd do
Hold her Jesus
And she'll hold on tight to You

I have a few songs that make me think of my children. For my older son though, the song Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) by The Dixie Chicks is #1. The bolded line is what did it for me. Since JP lives 1000 miles away, that line seems so very appropriate.

"Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)"

Dragon tales and the "water is wide"
Pirate's sail and lost boys fly
Fish bite moonbeams every night
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Sweet dreams

The rocket racer's all tuckered out
Superman's in pajamas on the couch
Goodnight moon, will find the mouse
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man

Godspeed
Sweet dreams

God bless Mommy and Matchbox cars
God bless Dad and thanks for the stars
God hears "Amen," wherever we are
And I love you

Godspeed, little man
Sweet dreams, little man
Oh my love will fly to you each night on angels wings
Godspeed
Godspeed
Godspeed
Sweet dreams

When Devin was an infant, DH started singing to him, just nonsense words at first, but they eventually took shape into Devin's very own lullaby. It doesn't have a name, the melody and lyrics are very simple, but D loves it.

Hush now, hush now
Little child of mine
Hush now, hush now
Everything is fine
You are so amazing
The perfect little baby
Hush now, hush now
Little child of mine

Sleep now, sleep now
Little child of ours
Sleep now, sleep now
Sleep among the stars
Know that we do love you
In everything that you do
Sleep now, sleep now
Little child of ours

Dream now, dream now
Little child of mine
Dream now, dream now
Dream of things divine
We are right beside you
To love you and to guide you
Dream now, dream now
Little child of mine

Wow everyone these are beautiful songs!! Lots I have heard before, but forgotten about. Wow. I was thinking of doing a cute star album with just one song, but now I'm trying to figure out how to fit three in at least. THanks everyone for the ideas! I love scrapping with songs!

I scrap lyrics a lot ... I like the idea of a mini album for a song!!

I have used Find your Wings by Mark Harris , as well as Martina McBride's In My Daughter's Eyes on layouts

A good one for Daddies & Grown Daughters is the new one Stealing Cinderella and I Loved Her First

A friend used that one country song "I wanna be just like you" on a slide show of her DH & sons.

I LOVE My Wish by Rascal Flatts. When I made the video for my DS's preschool last year we used. Sweet Child of Mine by Sheryl Crow, more upbeat fast song, I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack, My Wish by Rascal Flatts and Let Them be little by Billy Dean. This year we are using some of the same songs, but I recently found this song called Dream Big by Ryan Shupe & The Rubber Band and love it too.

It's a toss up between I hope you dance by Leeann Womack and Rascall Flatts, my wish for you! I love them both.

My Wish for you. I think that's what its called anyway. I could check my playlist to be sure.

This is such a great idea.

I like the song If I Stand. I know Jars of Clay has a version of it that is great.

For Colton my "song" is God Speed Sweet Dreams by Dixie Chicks and for Elly it's In My Daughter's Eyes by Martina McBride.

This is a great thread - there are even more I had forgotten about!
One I had totally forgotten about was Sara Groves Never Loose My Love

You will lose your baby teeth.
At times, you'll lose your faith in me.
You will lose a lot of things,
But you cannot lose my love.

You may lose your appetite,
Your guiding sense of wrong and right.
You may lose your will to fight,
But you cannot lose my love.

You will lose your confidence.
In times of trial, your common sense.
You may lose your innocence,
But you cannot lose my love.

Many things can be misplaced;
Your very memories be erased.
No matter what the time or space,
You cannot lose my love.
You cannot lose,
You cannot lose,
You cannot lose my love.

Ooh, ooh, another one I just remembered as it came up on Shuffle on my Ipod this morning...

This is the one I want a gospel choir to sing at my funeral while a slideshow of pictures of my life plays in the background. Not that I've thought abt this before in extensive depth or anything.

'Every Moment' by Joy Williams

We laughed out loud 'til we cried
And the tears were sweet
Midnight melted to morning
A moment faded to memory
All these days
They just slip away through our fingers
So...

CHORUS
Don't let go
Hold onto every moment
Always know
Hold onto every moment that You can

We move on with no regrets to our destiny
Held by the hands of the Father
We share His love and He leads us through
All these days
They just slip away through our fingers
So...

CHORUS

Running through yesterday into tomorrow
Don't let it just drift away
Forget about tying the hands of time
Give every minute to the One who gave us today

This is such a great thread...there are a few songs I hadn't heard of before and the lyrics are amazing.

I haven't done a LO with it YET, but a song for my girls is "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts (which was already mentioned ) I am a HUUUGE Rascal Flatts fan and that song is a must for me. *giggle*

A new song that I just LOVE is Cinderella by Steven Curtis Chapman.

She spins and she sways to whatever song plays,
Without a care in the world.
And I'm sittin' here wearin' the weight of the world on my shoulders.
It's been a long day and there's still work to do,
She's pulling at me saying "Dad I need you!
There's a ball at the castle and I've been invited and I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy, please!"

So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Oh I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone

She says he's a nice guy and I'd be impressed
She wants to know if I'd approve of a dress
She says "Dad, the prom is just one week away,
And I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy, please!"

So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
She will be gone.

Well, she came home today
With a ring on her hand
Just glowin' and tellin' us all they had planned
She says "Dad, the wedding's due six months away
And I need to practice my dancin'"
"Oh please, daddy please!"

So I will dance with Cinderella
While she is here in my arms
'Cause I know something the prince never knew
Ohh-oh ohh-oh, I will dance with Cinderella
I don't wanna miss even one song,
(even one song)
Cuz all to soon the clock will strike midnight
And she'll be gone
