Angry A real piece of work!

VENT!!!!

We manage apartments and a new guy moved in today... he is already annoying. So, I go take him to his apartment and show him how the cooler works. We have "evaporative coolers" or "swamp coolers" (I know, probably none of you know what that means). Basically, a swamp cooler evaporates water from a pump into the air, and in the process cools it (the heat in the air evaporates the water...). They only work well when it is dry out. When it's humid (like it is now because of the monsoon season) it can't cool the air much because the air is more saturated with water. During the hot, humid days, the coolest it can get is about 83 which feels worse because there is so much moisture. I have had LOTS of tenants come over and tell me their cooler is broken, when in fact it's just how the cooler works right now. Annoying.

Anyways... back to this new guy. I show him the two switches for the fan and the pump to turn the cooler on and he's like. "It's SO LOUD!" I'm like, "what?" It is NOT LOUD. He seriously says he thinks it's so loud he might not be able to sleep. It's not as quiet as a nice AC, but it is quieter than our window AC units. It's quieter than our swamp cooler in our last apartment. He wants us to fix it. It's fine. It's not broken. It's not loud. Tyrel tells him he can turn it off (and melt) if it's too loud. LOL!

Our apartments are furnished and he sees the bed he has. It's old. He INSISTS we buy him a brand new bed. "When I say I move here I expect new bed" (he's foreign) "I want new bed!" I explain to him that the bed isn't broken and doesn't need to be replaced. "I want new bed. That one too old!!!" Sorry, that is what we have. Yes, they are old, but they're not broken. If you want a new bed you have to buy your own. "You won't buy me new bed?!?!?!" NO!!!!!!! SHUT UP! Ok, I didn't say shut up, but I sure wanted to! lol... I can tell he's mad, but I really don't care.

Let me explain that we are an old complex and it was built at least 40 years ago. The furniture and lamps look like they're from the 70's. Yeah, they are ugly.... but the rent here is $405 a month. For the same size apartment this close to the university (walking distance) with new furniture and AC he'd be paying at least $200 a month MORE in rent.

He's crazy. You get what you pay for. We will repair broken stuff, but he's so ridiculous. I'm just annoyed and want to smack him upside the head. Bwahahahah!

Tell him to try renting in Orlando...for a furnished apartment like 12 years ago I was paying 480 a month with seventies style furniture and a nasty bed (bought a new bed). Now Ive heard for a cheap apartment it is up to 700 or so!! Oh and that was only one bedroom!

Hmmm, hope you don't start seeing some things "accidentally" broken.

LOL! But even if he did break his bed, we wouldn't buy him a new one... he'd just get a different bed from our furniture storage...lol!

Hmmmm....that's really tough. Maybe the language barrier is causing some extra stress and he didn't fully understand what to expect for the money? I can definitely see how it would be a pain for you to deal with his complaints, but having lived in a foreign country where I knew basically none of the language, I've misunderstood things too. (just to play devil's advocate, he really could just be being difficult because he can!). I hope there doesn't end up being any extra trouble for you now...I don't envy your job! Good luck!!

Uck! Good luck. Maybe once he moves in and gets settled he'll be a better tenant!

Oh yuck Megan! That totally stinks for you. There is always someone who wants all for nothing, isn't there. When DH and I were in college, he worked as front desk manager at a hotel. People would come in right at check-in, stay until late checkout and say there was a problem and they wanted their $ back (with no complaints during the night of course). Argh.

Hang in there!

Sounds like this guy is being a pain!! We had a swamp cooler when we were growing up and it worked great! I'd say he should try the alternative for a few days and see how he likes that - the heat will melt him in a second. Then maybe he'll think it is not too loud.
