Default Oh my crap, the school lost my DD!!!!

Oh my gosh, I am still shaking!!! My DD who is 5 and special needs was not on the bus with her brother who is also 5. We immediately called the school and they said they had no clue where she was but would look for her and call me back. Finally after like 10 minutes they called me and said they think she got on the wrong bus!!! I don't understand how that can happen, she knows her bus number and her brother!! I kept asking how in the heck can they loose a 5 year old and the lady kept saying something about a funeral today so alot of the staff was gone. Sorry not a good excuse to me!! Hubby finally headed to the school, they called me while he was on the way and they had found her. She wasn't even on a bus and they couldn't figure that out!! Unbelievable!!

OMG I would be LIVID. I would be in that principals office first thing monday morning and I'd be on the phone with the superintendant right now. That is not acceptable. I'm glad that they found her Melissa!!!!

I'm glad she's ok! Our school here lost my oldest on the first day of school in 2nd and 3rd grade! I still shudder when I think about it!

How horrible! You would think that for special needs there would be even more precautions! And with 5 year olds!

Same thing happened to my daughter on her first day of kindergarten. She went to the wrong class and we got a call saying she wasnt in school that day. We had sent her and told them that and they did a search of the school. Im not really sure how the teacher who had her didnt notice he/she had an extra student. Glad they found your little girl though. I can tell you from experience I know exactly how scary that can be

Oh my gosh, SO glad they found her safe & sound! Good for your DH for giving the principal an earful too! They should be extra careful, especially with the little ones! I don't think I could handle my girls riding the bus to/from school, definitely makes me glad we live super close to their school so I just walk them over myself.

Melissa I would be absolutely livid. Oh my gosh, I don't care if the school was on fire and almost all the teachers were absent today. Absolutely positively no excuse. I think the old mean Amy would definitely have come out and raised the roof up in there. Kudos to you for not writing to us from a jail cell, as I probably would be!
I'm so glad she's ok. (((HUGS))) Melissa

WHOA! not good! a friend of mine's 6 year old ds just walked away from school when it let out (he always has to stay at the after school program) to go find his mom. it was only the grace of God that a friend of hers happened to see him walking on the sidewalk of a busy street. luckily he was ok and we live in a super safe community. i think i would die if either scenario ever happened to me! so glad she is safe and sound, melissa!

Thats so scary Melissa! When I was 5 I got on the wrong bus on the first day of school and my mom almost had a heart attack. She still says (22 years later) that it was the scariest thing thats ever happened to her.

Hopefully now they'll make an extra effort to get your DD where she needs to be.

WOW that is terrifying! I'm shaking just reading that!!! That is totally unacceptable, there should be a LOT more supervision of bus loading and unloading if you ask me, I have heard about too many problems like this. NO EXCUSE. I am soooo thankful that our school is a block and a half away and I can walk my daughter there and pick her up!!

I'm so glad they found her, but I do agree that it should never have happened. Special needs kids should have someone there to make sure they get on their bus, and the bus driver should get to know their kids well enough that they'd recognize a student was missing!

My son is in KG this year, and he has to transfer buses to get to his babysitter after school. On his first day of school, he got on the wrong bus at the transfer school! Luckily, Blake knew where he was and knew exactly how to get to the sitter's so he gave the driver directions to her house, and he took him there! Otherwise, it would have been a big fiasco.

Hugs for your huge fright ... I certainly hope they never ever let this happen again!

that is like totally most parents worst fear; i can't imagine how u must have felt - the school has a responsibility and needs to be more diligent, funeral or not, and with a special needs kid, no less! glad things turned out ok but i would not just let the school push this one under the rug.

I was thinking back to how it was for me riding the bus in elementary school. When the final bell rang at the end of the day, we weren't allowed to just walk out of our classrooms. The teacher had a list of all the kids who walked home and got picked up by parents, and over the announcement system, the first kids to be called would be 'walkers and pick ups', and only those kids left. A few mins later they'd call the first bus number, and those kids could go, then a few more mins later call the next bus in line, and so on. If you were walking home with a friend, or getting picked up and were a regular bus rider, you had to give your teacher a note or you weren't allowed to leave during the 'walkers and pickups' call. I never had any problems finding my bus, and I was the kid who was always terrified of getting lost, but it was such an easy system. When you left the building after your bus was called, there were teachers directing you to your bus. If you missed your bus call and left at a later bus number call, you had to talk to the driver with a teacher to make sure you really should be on that bus. Why can't teachers/schools nowadays have something like that?! I hate hearing about so many kids being lost or misplaced coming home from school. I'm going to be super paranoid about that when my girls finally go!

OMG--how scary! Chaotic day or not, they need to take the time to make sure the little ones are getting where they need to be, especially kids with special needs. I hope you plan to follow up tomorrow and ask what precautions they're putting in place to make sure this never happens again. My 2-year old is in a special needs preschool class, and some of his classmates ride the bus. The idea of putting him on a bus, unable to even tell people his name if anything happened, was just too scary for me. I'm so glad she's okay!

I'm so glad she's ok! As a former teacher, I just have to say that that is completely unacceptable! And I don't know how big the school is, but in my experience, our principals ALWAYS knew which students had special needs. They made it a priority.

SCARY!! DD is in first grade and riding the bus this year for the first time, and I still hold my breath every day when the bus pulls up until I see her getting off. I'm glad they found her and hope that changes are put in place so that this never EVER happens to her again!

No doubt! I would flip out! As a mommy of a special needs kiddo, it frightens me how little attention some people pay to them and how little some seem to care. Especially since you gave them her care plan?! That is just completely unacceptable to me.
