Default Sensory Disorder??

Does anyone here have a child with a sensory processing disorder. After reading Janet Philips blog Friday night I have been reading more and more about it and I am pretty sure THIS is what my son has. I have know for a while that something just wasn't right but I couldn't get his behaviors to fit into any typical diagnosis ... like ADHD, Autism, Asperger's, ect. I am searching for an occupational therapist in town and I think I have one lead.

Yes, my two year old has SPD. It has been a hard diagnosis to discover, and it's currently taking all my spare energy learning how to deal with Aidan's most recent "ticks."

I don't either, but I also found Janet's post fascinating. It's really troubling how many children are being affected by these types of disorders and I wonder what it is in our environment that is causing these sorts of things. My prayers go out to you as you go down this road, too.

Amanda, is Aiden a "hyper sensitive" or a "Hypo Sensitive"? I am discovering that Anthony is more on the Hypo Sensitive in most areas. He is definitely has lots of sensory seeking behavior.

Not here, but Jen Strange's son was diagnosed with it a while back...I think his diagnosis has changed or at least gotten more precise from there since, but she reads a TON about that stuff. Look her up on GoodReads, she's got all sorts of stuff on there.

Aidan is both, depending on the situation, and we're still learning what will set her off and what won't. Aidan has a lot of tactile defensiveness, but she is a sensory seeker in other areas. The one thing we've learned the hard way is that there is no "cookie-cutter" mold that all kids will fit into.

My son has several sensory issues. Potty training was crazy because he would cover his ears in fear every time he flushed the potty. He also can't stand strong smells like coffee or any kind of bumpy foods. It has been quite a challenge but OT is a big help. He is in 1st grade now and doing great! If you ever have questions or want someone to chat with feel free to pm me.

My DS has a processing disorder. For him, everything is too... well everything.... Clothes are too scratchy, lights are too bright, sounds are too loud. And, then when he gets overloaded, he can't contain himself. Gosh, ChuckECheese birthday parties were the worst. He would just sit on my lap and hide his head in my jacket or something. We politely decline those kinds of b-day parties now.
We did take him to a special audiologist to have the hearing part evaluated. He has pin-drop hearing, but only can process at about 40% in one ear and 60% in the other. So, basically, we have to cut him some slack for having to tell him things a couple of times! As for the other sensory issues, it has gotten better over time. Big, wide open places, like costco or crowded ballparks/malls are really hard on him. Also, when there is a transition time in class and everyone is moving around and talking at the same time. Too much info going in and not enough time to process the input.

Good luck with this. If your child sounds like mine to you, this book may be good to read: Too loud, Too Bright, Too Fast, Too Tight by Sharon Heller. PM me if you need any more info.

You know what kills me the most?

When she tells me that my kisses on her forehead hurt her. I just want to cry everytime.

that would kill me Amanda. ((( HUGS))) I think the reason I haven't put 2 and 2 together before now is that Anthony isn't bothered by loud noises, or lots of activity or things like that. Her craves them ... the louder the better. He has the TV up all the way, is always running, jumping, in constant motion. He constantly wants me to touch him. BUT - he has lots of food aversions I am going to go pick up The Out of Symc Child this afternoon. I am sure I will have questions. Great to know there are some here to talk to

Can someone hook me up with a link to Janet's blog.

I'm pretty sure my son has some sort of sensory disorder. My sister, a preK teacher, agrees. I think when we go in for is 4 year check-up I'm going ask that he be tested.

I haven't seen Janet's blog, but I would suggest starting with the Out-of-Synch Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz.
Here are some of Aidan's "symptoms" that may help you as well (this is not all of them):
-doesn't like to try new foods or textures. she hates anything with chunks or lumps in it.

-she hates wearing clothes and shoes. she will only wear them because we make her. lately, she has been telling us that her shirt straps or sleeves are hurting her shoulders. at the same time, she freaks out if we don't let her wear her clothes a certain way, such as if she puts her shirt on backwards.

-she hates being dirty. she flips out if she gets the slightest bit dirty.

-although she loves the bath, she recently has become afraid of it. screaming that the luke warm water is too hot or too cold.

-she has started telling me that kissing her forehead hurts her

-every little touch "hurts" her, yet at the same time, she loves being held and cuddled

-she flips out and has complete meltdowns at the slightest change in her routine. I mean violent, throwing her head and body around, meltdowns.

-she's extremely ticklish

-small falls or cuts are the end of the world, and she has a hard time forgetting them

-has a hard time being gentle or using too much force

-loves being tipped upside down

-could swing or twirl forever

-seriously hyperactive 95% of the time, and when she crashes, she crashes hard.
