Default Haha, Well...Lesson Learned

So...this morning I open up iTunes and I'm all like "yay, I'm going to listen to music and finish up the Inspired By... templates for October"...but iTunes can't find my music. Hmm...OK. Maybe I forgot to turn on my external (usually it's on all the time, except if I'm not going to be around for the weekend or a few days). Turned it on...nothing. Turned it off, then back on...still nothing.

I'm pretty sure it's dead.

But, I'm not crying TOO hard. I've lost about 280GB worth of stuff, but I'm alright with it because ALL of my photos and layouts were backed up onto my other EHD. I *did* lose all my kits (years worth), and I was a MAJOR hoarder, especially of Shabby Princess, Gina Cabrera, Peppermint Creative and Mary Fran (I have pretty much EVERY thing that they've ever put out in each of their designing careers). I lost my music *again* lol...but I just did a sort-of backup - I had spent an entire day last week changing their format from iTunes mp4 or whatever to mp3 so we could use it on our mp3 players (we do have iPods, but have other mp3 players as well), so all the mp3 copies are on my computer's hard drive still.

So, girls...if you've got important files...BACK THEM UP! It saved my butt. I would be BAWLING right now if I lost my photos. Layouts can be replaced...thankfully I'd backed them up as well. I was sorta considering backing up my kits (my original EHD was 300GB and was getting very close to full, so I bought a new 1TB EHD to back it all up with a few months ago), but other than the fact that I lost a whole bunch of stuff I have spent money on and never used (umm...remember, I used to spend $300+/month on digi stuff...99.9% of it is still unused)...quite literally thousands of dollars, lol. OUCH.

Yeah, so that's my story. Now I'm off to organize the mp3 files and listen to some tunage while I work on those Inspired By... templates, lol!

Wow sweety Im so glad you were all backed up, what a nightmare you have saved yourself! I can only imagine what that woulda felt like. I REALLY need to back up so bad. I will have to dedicate a weekend to that now that I am trying to get back on track.

Do you still have a warrenty on the external? I had this happen to me and it ended up being the bus. So I sent it in to the company and they replaced it for free and my data was still there.

The bus is what drives the drive according to the man on the phone. My drive would turn on but the computer would not recognize it.

That happened to me on Saturday. Everything worked fine, then suddenly nothing. It just keeps asking me to format the drive!

Everything was backed up elsewhere for the most part, so the only thing is, it's just a pain for me to find anything, because the other backups were on cds.

It was just a "homemade" type one that I bought on eBay about 3 years ago. I think it's a Maxtor hard drive inside a Nexstar case, lol (all externals are is internal hard drives put in a case - so I paid less to get them "unmatching" - EHD's used to be SO expensive, but they've come down in price a LOT).

Mine isn't even powering on...so my computer can't even attempt to recognize it. I checked the cords and they're fine (I mean, USB cord is plugged in and so is the power cord), so not really sure what is going on. I'm not going to give up on it completely yet, but I'm definitely not going to take it in and say "please recover all my data"...all the important stuff is backed up, and I'm not paying thousands more for kits, lol!

I NEED to get some more cds to finish burning all my stuff. I've had a few scares with mine, and I freak every time! I got a good chunk of it burned, just not all of it, and I'd be so sad if I lost my kits! Right now since I ran out of discs, I still have like 10 gb of pics on my internal even though they're on my ehd also... I never delete from my internal until they're burned also-I have BAD luck with computers!!! lol.
I'm glad you had gotten some of your stuff backed up though, especially your photos!!!

No, I don't...but like I said, it's not even powering on. So if there's a problem like that, it'll be with the power cord (don't have another of those, either, lol).

Yikes. I really need to get something done with all my stuff in case my laptop or EHD crashes. I've been considering online backup for my pics and lo's so I should look into that more seriously I guess.

Sorry about all of the stuff you lost.

This is also what we had. Ours was less than two years old. I'm just glad I didn't actually lose much, just 1 folder of photos, we think.

Update, lol...I was just sitting here, working...and all of a sudden my EHD turned on. For no reason. So I dunno, but it's working right now, lol. There must be a short in the power cord or something (my other EHD is also on and flickered when the original one turned on)

How about doing some backing up now?

Glad it came on for you!

I'm glad it came back on for you--hurry up and back up those kits! Like you said, the really important stuff was safely backed up and kits can be replaced, but it's even nicer that you don't have to replace them.
