Default Cut out question for PSE5 users

I need help...please!! I would love to learn how to "cut out" a shape on a layer (ex. in the middle of the page) and when that shape is "cut out", the paper below shows through. Is there anyone that can help me learn how/teach me how:unsure to do this on PSE5? Thank you for any advice/help.

So, place your shape above the paper you want to cut. Then select the paper so it is highlighted in the layers palette. Hold down CTRL and click on the thumbnail of the shape's layer in the layers palette.

You'll notice the "marching ants" around the shape. Hit delete and then hit CTRL+D to deselect the lines. Delete the shape layer and your paper should be cut!

Edited. I can't open PSE to see how I use to do it. I had a big explanation but couldn't remember all the steps. I was different than Megan's but got the same results.

The digital community is so very helpful and I really do appreciate the quick reply/help. Megan...you are my superhero today!! I was so frustrated trying to figure out how to do the cut-out on my page. Yes, I do believe you are "that good".
