I don't really believe in errors when it comes to Lost. My theory is that that is actually current time-line Desmond (the one married to Penny and has a child) traveling between the time lines to manipulate the alt-timeline Losties to "see the light" if you will - as in make the connection between the two time lines. I'm not sure why but I think Doc Jensen is probably right in his column about needing the two versions of yourself to be aware of each other in order for the timelines to merge. Maybe Desmond is the link between the two timelines? Plus in the season premiere didn't Desmond disappear off the plane? Maybe that is why?
