Netbooks don't generally have cd/dvd drives but an external one can be hooked up. I did another trick where I used a program to make an 'image' of a CD then put it on a flash drive and loaded onto my netbook that way. It worked for some programs but my favorite sudoku game had a minimum screen size and wouldn't load. A mini-laptop would offer more power and more options later for homework. I ended up trading my netbook for DD's laptop. the laptop isn't really portable because the power cord port is really loose so if you breathe on it wrong it unplugs itself and I needed a larger screen. But I still only use it for surfing, pogo, e-books, etc.
She is fine with doing all of her online stuff on the netbook...she's 21 and doesn't need anything more than that. Kristi |

I have an external DVD drive already but I'm thinking I'm just going to get her a laptop...even the cheapest dell laptop I think would be better than the netbook. She's starting high school (knock on wood lol) in the fall so it's something she can grow with a little I think
Thanks for the input!

My 18y/o has a Dell netbook and I am able to scrap on it just fine. Its a little small but I made this layout on it(so you know if she got into any type of graphic design class in school):
![]() She uses it for reports and such. We use a 1 gigabyte USB thumb drive for transferring files back and forth. She also has an external DVD drive for it but does not use it a whole lot. It works well for internet too. She also likes the size and the weight of it. It does not add alot of bulk to her backpack. |

My husband uses a Netbook and loves it. He can do everything he needs to on it: word processing and Internet. I would go crazy if I had to work on that itty bitty screen, though.

If you do go with a netbook, don't get the Eee PC, I've had nothing but problems and customer service sucks :-(
I've heard great things about the Dell and Acer ones though. |

My 14 yr dd has an netbook - ok it was really meant for my little one to play on but she took it over and loves it. We have a wireless printer so she can print anything she needs for school. She does use our desktop though when she needs to do graphics or something with a bigger screen.

We have a netbook and while it's convenient for travel, I hate working on it. The screen is too small and they keyboard sucks.
