Can I ask for your prayers?
You may remember me posting here about a problem I had with gifts for my husband's brothers twins. Momma had an extremely difficult pregnancy (lost weight while the babies were gaining, had some autoimmune thing attacking her legs, lost her hearing), but they were finally born on New Years Eve via c-section. One of the twins, McCoy, 5+ pounds, and little Ryder was only 3 pounds. Ryder got moved up to where we live to be put in the NICU. He's now in a special care unit, which while still constantly monitored, give the family their own room. He's really doing well. Started drinking from a bottle yesterday and his temp is starting to regulate. He's a fighter.
Mom is not doing as well. Sunday she was released from her local hospital and came straight up to see her little guy (the other baby had been with her). When she arrived, my BIL immediately knew something wasn't right. They took her straight to the ER, and while there, she suffered back to back seizures and they had to put her on a ventilator and sedate her to get them to stop. She's now in Surgical ICU, but came off the vent yesterday. For most of the day, she was still unconscious, but towards the end of the day, she started to respond a little. She remembered her mom and brother, but not my BIL. She responded to her daughter's name (they have a 17 month old) but didn't seem to be aware she'd even been pregnant with the boys. However, my BIL was telling her cousin this last night and momma said, "Did the boys come early?" So there's lots of hope. They still have no idea what caused it, although they have a lot they've ruled out. My husband's sisters and I have been taking turns taking care of little McCoy. Momma's family very rightfully wants to be with mom, and McCoy has been lucky enough to be given an empty hospital room so that he can be near his brother and momma (although he is not a patient). I spent most of Sunday evening/night and all day yesterday up helping out. I'm back on duty Wednesday night. Not sure how things are going now or will go today, but maybe I won't be needed. I'd be sad that I don't get my snuggle time, but I'd be so happy for momma. We are very conscious that we are the ones spending time with her newborn, and not her. Thank you for reading this book. If you could keep the little guys and their parents in your thoughts and prayers, it would be much appreciated.

Most definitely will add you to my prayer list . . . such a lot to deal with! If it helps you think positively about Ryder, my great nephew was born 3 months early & only weight one-and-a-half pounds. He was in NICU for nearly 3 months but today is a perfectly healthy, extremely active 18 month old! As for mom, that sounds really scary . . . I'll say extra prayers for her.

Thank you so much everyone. Momma was moved to a regular room today, but she's still not completely aware. She thought it was November, for example. I go on duty tomorrow at 5:30 pm, and will be there until Friday sometime (whenever my dh can get up there to give me a break... and shower).

OMG that is so scary. Is she suffering from eclampsia? I has SEVERE pre-eclampsia and almost went into seizures and my son was delivered extremely early. We both survived but it was a touch and go for me for a couple days. I will keep your family in my thoughts.

Susan, that's what they're tossing around. However, she had none of the risk factors before delivery, so it's very strange that she would develop it 36 hours after delivery. There's always the possibility that she had it and they didn't notice, I guess, but she was very well monitored by several doctors, so it's hard to believe they might not catch it.

How seriously scary for all of you. I hope she continues to be lucid and improves. I hope too, that they figure all this out and she is able to leave the hospital with a definite diagnosis and be totally recovered. Prayers for your whole family.

Kim, eclampsia CAN happen after birth....in fact, that is when you're most at risk to have a seizure. You can have no symptoms and then it can strike up to 6 weeks post partum. I hope they put her on magnesium sulfate just be sure.
My pre eclampsia got worse immediately after I had both of my kids. I had to be hospitalized for over a week after both births until I was stabilized. Definitely google it and talk to the docs. It is a horrible and perplexing disease. I am keeping her in my thoughts.

Believe me, it can definitely happen that way . . . my niece, who happens to be a doctor herself and was sooooooo closely monitored, had no risk factors & zero symptoms until about 3 days before she delivered - 3 months early. As Susan mentioned with her situation, it was touch & go for several days . . . but it's phenomenal what they can do now, and I'm sure everything will turn out okay. Meanwhile, lots of positive thoughts sent that way!
