Thoughts on Tamron lenses?
Reading Jen's post made me think I should get a better lens for our upcoming vacation. I have a 50mm and a good long distance zoom but we still have the kit lens for close up and personal shots.
I'm looking at this one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...F_28_80mm.html has anyone purchased Tamron and have any thoughts to share? |

I have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and I adore it. It's on my camera 90% of the time.
I'm a bit of a prime-a-holic, so I wouldn't get that lens that you linked. I like the flexibility that a prime gives, better than a variable aperture lens like that one.

personally I would get the Canon kit lens over this particular Tamron... I've used a Tamron in the past and while I'm a fan of off brand lenses for the more expensive lenses when you can't afford the camera brand lens... the less expensive lenses I'd skip the off brands... the off brands just aren't as sharp as the camera brands.

Do you have time to rent it to try it out?
I also do not like the variable aperture lens. It seems that the lens searches (for lack of a better word) when taking a shot. Of course I am just going off my own experience with a kit lens and a low end zoom lens.

I have this tamron zoom lens and I love it!!!
Tamron AF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 LD for Canon Digital SLR Cameras I've only used it a hand full of times cause I bought it specifically for the beach, I like to sit on my blanket and take pictures of the kids in the ocean. I've also use it a few times at the park. I would never dream of using it indoors (well it might work with a tripod) I just don't think I could get a good shot. But I'll be honest with you...I wouldn't hesitate to buy that lens you listed, it's a great price and considering I'm not a pro and all I really do is take snapshots of my kids it would probably fit my bill just perfectly!!!

Tamron makes lenses to fit all kinds of mounts, yes. You would just buy the Canon mount version.

I do have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and it is a great all around lens, though it's quite a bit pricier at $499 retail. I've found that I prefer prime lenses so I'm thinking of selling mine (along with a couple of other lenses) since I rarely use it these days and would rather have another good prime lens.

We have a Tamron 28-250 and LOVE it. Yes, it's not the best when it comes to low-light, indoor shots, but for outside travel it's fantastic. Cost-wise it's more than met our needs.

I have had the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 for 5 years. It has been on my camera probably 50% of the time, taking pictures of toddlers, so it has been very ungently used. And I still get amzing pictures from it. I have the Canon 100 macro lens, which I think gives me the best quality pictures of all my lenses, but there are times when I don't know if a picture is taken with my 100 or 28-75, if I used them both on the same day. I prefer prime lenses, but if you are going on vacation on want a better all around lens than the kit lens. The Tamron is a great buy. Canon is more than double the price, and you don't get double the quality as far as results go.

And a lot of times you can buy used 2.8f Tamrons because people decide to upgrade to L glass or whatever. Check into that! Last edited by sprauncey1; 02-12-2011 at 09:39 AM. |

If it were me, I probably wouldn't go with the Tamron as a walk-around lens only because I don't find the 28mm focal length to be wide enough in a lot of situations (like landscapes, buildings, etc). But that's totally going to depend on your shooting style so you might be completely happy with it. I use a Canon 17-85mm lens a lot when I travel mainly because I love the focal length of it. It's a variable aperture but since I mostly only use it for it's wide angle I don't have too many issues with it.
If you're just looking to get a lens for a specific trip, you might rent a lens instead. I've done this in the past and was really pleased with my experience. |

I'm with ya on that Lynnette. I only took my 28-75 and 50mm lenses with my on our honeymoon, to try and save space and weight in the backpack. I definitely wished I had a wider lens. We're going to Ireland this fall (with a possible side trip back to Paris for a few days) and I'm either renting a wide angle lens, or bringing my kit lens with me.

I have one for sale right now with a Nikon mount. Only selling it because my camera is broken and I am going to switch to Canon.

Thanks ladies. All of this advice makes me realize I really need to learn more about my camera! I don't have a clue the difference between prime and variable aperture.
I had thought of renting, but the cost of the shipping made me wonder if I might as well just purchase. I think I will rent one for vacation while I save up and learn more! |

If it helps, I misspoke, lol. My tamron is a fixed aperture zoom, not a prime. I do love primes though, lol!
Prime = only 1 focal length (like a 50mm, or 35mm, or 85mm) Fixed aperature = any focal length will be able to shoot at that aperature (so my 28-75 f/2.8 is a zoom that can shoot at f/2.8 anywhere in that range of focal lengths) Variable aperature = different focal lengths have different wide open aperatures. For the lens you linked to, you would be able to shoot at f/3.5 at 28mm, but only at f/5.6 at 80mm. That's a BIG difference.

I would rent first if you have time to do so. If it doesn't nail focus fast and accurately, it's a deal breaker for me. Every Tamron I got my hands on was horrible with those 2 things, especially when compared to Nikon. The 28-75 hunted in low light and got totally confused and hunted worse with a few sun rays in its way. I was really disappointed since I'd planned on buying the 28-75 prior to the rentals. Some people have them and love them, I'm not one. Will never buy an off brand lens, I'll just save up for what I know I can rely on.

Thanks for the link Angie! I talked to my husband and we decided to rent a lens that is well out of our price range to purchase but has excellent reviews. We don't take big family vacations often and figure its a well spent investment. Now to pray I don't lose a $1,300 lens!!
