I'm loving all the great advice in this thread! Not to hijack, but...is there any advantage to using a light scoop like this with indoor shots?

I'm saving up for the Speedlite of my dreams, but until then, I was wondering if this might help.

Looks like that is an add on to the flash on your camera that bounces it up, like what you do with an external flash. Yes this could help some but you still don't have the option of the angle and if you try to shoot in portrait orientation it definitely won't help you! I used to use a diffuser on my pop up flash that helped a bunch (not so harsh flash from camera) but stopped once I got my external bounce flash.

yeah, I was going to say to save your money for the speedlite... if you google you can totally make your own diffuser until you get your speedlite... I also recommend having a diffuser for your speedlite, they're like $10 if it doesn't already come with one... mine lives on my flash.

I got this so I could save up for a Speedlite. I was really surprised how awesome the photos turned out from using it. There are some instances where it doesn't help: shooting a portrait photo - you have to pay attention to what the light will be bouncing off of. But sometimes a little photoshopping will fix it just fine. And if there are different color ceilings (and sometimes walls) that can affect the color, and sometimes exposure, of the photo. But I have nice white ceilings, and I just love the soft shadows on my kiddos face from using this. And I love the catch light that it makes in my kiddos eyes - makes it almost look like I had a reflector set up or something, lol

Oh - and really high ceilings won't work really well with it either.

THIS layout is the only one that has photos that I used the lightscoop on - and they are some of my fave photos! For the price - I couldn't be happier. I shoot lots of indoor shots, and my lightscoop almost never comes off my camera

I just wanted to make a quick suggestion here and that is because I spent a lot of time shooting RAW and a lot of time trying to figure out white balance. I'm not a gadget person so I hated messing with the WB gadgets. I shot RAW forever but I got really tired of that especially when I take sooo many pictures. Lately, I just keep my camera on auto WB mode and use levels to adjust my white balance. There is a grey dropper. Just click on that and then click on an area in your photo that is a medium tone, I click around until it looks close, you can also change the opacity to get your pictures just right. ALSO, one other thing is that if you are working an a batch of pictures, sometimes it helps to just get up and walk away. You might have a color cast and you just aren't seening it. If you take a step away and come back it becomes obvious.
