Talk to me about Lego storage!

My DD is turning 9 next week and she's really gotten into Lego's this past year. We're in the process of re-doing her room to something a little more tween vs. little girl (brown, lt pink, bright pink, orange and white). I'm looking for ideas for Lego storage and maybe even a table or something she can build on.

I'm working on getting her some new shelves to display her creations but I'm so worried about walking in there and stepping on those little Lego pieces that I have to come up with a way to contain everything and make it work in our redecorating plans.

What do you use to store Legos at your house? Any unique ideas?

We did a bigger 3 drawer sterlite container and that's it. I'm SO anal and wanted all the kits to be kept in individual baggies so they wouldn't get lost, but the boys just weren't having it. So we have one drawer for kits in process and special pieces, and the other 2 drawers are for everything else. We keep a notebook of instructions in a 3 ring binder with the instructions in page protectors so if they want to build something again, they might have to search for pieces, but they'll still have the instructions. It's a table top storage unit..not one of those mongo floor ones.

This made me giggle because my family is the exact opposite. My mother was hoping all the kits could just go in a big bin together because it would take up less space, and my brother was freaking out saying "NO! You can't mix up the kits, mom!"

found it! I remembered a post that Ali Edwards did on lego storage for Simon... looks like she keeps them in the closet... I've seen where people have glued one of those lego boards onto a desk...

We use a really big fabric box (with lid) from Ikea. It is very sturdy and holds a ton of legos. For items they are working on both boys have a clear container to keep their creations in. We also have a paper storage box with all the instructions.

My son's dad keeps them in plastic bins meant for hardware storage, the ones with all the little drawers... but then they just end up all mixed up and back in a big sterilite bin. I kept telling him that it was pointless to sort them out, but he wouldn't listen. Our son just likes them all mixed up. At first I wanted them all divided out by set like Darcy, but then I gave up.. at this point I don't think we should buy him anymore sets, because of the mixing mess, but we do anyways.. I give up. lol,

Thanks for this link! I love the idea of the tables, the little drawers and especially the cookie sheets! My boys are always wanting to transport their projects.

Love the cookie sheet idea- we do similiar... the cheap, eco way. I keep old shoebox lids that he keeps the pieces in when he's building them. That way the pieces don't fall on the floor where the baby can get them (gasp! I'm always nervous because she's put Legos in her mouth on plenty of occasions) and he can transport the set he's working on in the lids too.

We have about 15 years of Legos from 4 boys in our house, so it's pretty out of control. We have huge boxes of random loose ones, keep sets in baggies as much as possible and a box for instructions. I'd love a better, creative, clever way to store them, but truth be told, we probably only have a year or so left of interest in Legos.

I got the table from IKEA to do this with but just havent bought the lego boards to glue to the top. The table was CHEAP- $9.99 and I know my boys will love it!

One GINORMOUS bin. I tried keeping them separated in sets... separated by minifigs/size... but they always ended up together. So together they went.

We keep them in the clear plastic bins on DS's bookcase. One big container was too frustrating for him to find things in, so we use lots of smaller ones (shoe box sized). He mixes pieces all the time, so no real organization. For projects in progress we have a big white plastic tray from Target with handles on the sides that can be built on and carried from one place to another. If he builds anyplace other than his room, he has to keep everything on the tray.

We're in the middle of redoing 2 rooms, so I've spent a lot of time at Ikea lately. If I were looking for good storage that could be used with Legos for now and something else later, I think I'd get one of these Expedit bookcases with some of the sized-to-fit bins and maybe a few doors. That way there would be places to store the collection as well as to display finished pieces. I don't think the biggest things would fit on the shelves for display, but most of what we have would.

we keep special sets separate, in small plastic containers. But the majority of the Lego in this house (from three boys) is in one big Rubbermaid tote in Xander's room. Quinten has all his duplo/mega blocks in a open toy box in his room, since his are Cars sets and CAT construction sets.
