the frustration of writing term papers on manual typewriters
having to wait for a vhs tape to rewind recording your favorite song off the radio onto a cassette tape and having the DJ's voice over the first and last few seconds of the song then using those recordings to make a "mix-tape" ![]() dialing a rotary phone that's NOT cordless..but having one of those super long cords on it so you can stretch it all the way from the kitchen to the hall closet for some "privacy" having a total of THREE channels on TV (four when the skies were clear) that absolutely would not rewind, pause or fast forward hearing the sound of a dial up connection on the computer ![]()

Mix tapes was totally the first thing that popped into my head. Mix-cd's just doesn't have the same ring to it :P
Along those lines, walk-man's and personal cd players. Pagers. Records/players.

The smell of fresh dittos given to you by a teacher. I can remember getting assignments and the ink was still wet.
For that matter, how about those awful movies we'd watch in school on the projectors with reels of film.

Let's bring some Eastern European dimension to this. ;-)
I think these days Slovak kids no longer learn Czech as easy as we did - we still grew up in Czechoslovakia where we were exposed to the language... That's what I miss... And all the wonderful kiddo cartoons we watched... The Communist regime wasn't much but great programmes came to life, they really did. As a generation (people in their 30s and 40s) we are joined by common memories of these programmes, unlike today, when everything changes so quickly... You can buy them on DVD though, which reminds me of another... These days the suspense of not missing something on TV is gone, as you can buy / record anything. When I was a kid, video recorders were a rarity. The bad things they are happy to miss: - they aren't forced to learn Russian, - they can travel, - when they go to a shop there's actually a choice unlike in my childhood, - fruit such as oranges are no longer only available like twice a year (like, on the 1st of May and before Christmas).

As for ink, typewriters and phones with round dials - I have a veeery nostalgic relationship to them, especially the phones. I loved how the dial rolled and dialling each number lasted / sounded differently. :-)

And cartoons 6-noon on Saturdays!! Now cartoons aren't on until 9 and they really aren't cartoons.
Hubby and I were just having a similar conversation about the bills that we have compared to our parents... our parents probably had elect, sewer/water, mortage, maybe gas (both our parents used solar/burned wood - my parents didn't gas furnace until I was in high school)... they didn't have credit cards, we didn't have cable, netflix, internet, cell phones, water service, broker service, cleaning service, landscaping, gym memberships, wholesale clubs, etc. We wonder what kind of bills J will have when he is our age..

Lol, my dad, who has always been an early adopter, had one of the first "mobil phones". It was about the size of a toaster oven, built into the car between the seats and you spoke on a regular phone handset that was attached by the curly wire to the body of the unit. Needless to say, we weren't begging for our own to carry to school.
