Default Kids who scrap?

My 2nd grader completed her first scrapbook (paper) this spring and has expressed an interest in digi scrapping. Anyone have kids who scrap? Any tips for getting her started? I was thinking of maybe starting with a simple template.

I'm not sure I want her to get too into it - then I'll have to share my computer time! lol!

LOL, when I saw the title of your thread, I was like, "Nope, none of us would give up our scrap time for our kids' sake." Then you said the same thing, made me giggle.

Janet Phillips did a post on that once, and she had Alaina use a template and let her pick out all the stuff. I'm sure with a template it'd be easy to do. Maybe she could do it during the time you're making dinner or something...

I think if you kid is computer savvy, she could certainly work with a template! Teach her how to do a clipping mask, resive the elements, and give her a few simple shadow choices and she'll be on a roll!

Maybe someday she'll have a career in designing, CAD software or something like that! You never know! My sister does a TON of CAD work with her architect degree!

JP's done a page and begs to do more all the time. I'm just not patient enough to sit with him/teach him anything on PS! I might be able to do it better now that he'll have a laptop of his own to use (my retired laptop). We'll see!

My daughter loooooves to scrap - she started at age 9 1/2. The only problem is that she wants to use my computer all the time. She picked up CS5 really quickly and now wants to make layouts to go along with all of her school reports. I've actually had to tell her teachers that she did it by herself!!! LOL!!

I finally got sick of her using my laptop so I ordered her photoshop elements. Hopefully she'll be able to make the transition pretty easily!!

She's made more layouts but hasn't uploaded them yet....Here is her little gallery.

Cheyanne started paper scrapping when she was about 6 - she loved using eyelets because of the hammer She's been using PSE now for a couple years and loves it. She has PSE 7 on her laptop and probably knows more about manipulating photos than I do! She's has a very geometric-oriented brain and is great with graphics. I just showed her the basics of how to get started and also how to use a template and she just exploded from there. Thankfully we don't have to fight for computer time - she has a laptop and I use my desktop, which I prefer because of the larger screen - these old eyes need the large area to work with!

I was once on a team with a 12 year old, and she was FANTASTIC! I think she may have gotten her start on templates and quickly got to scrapping without them.

I agree with others... teach her a simple clipping mask, and a few other tips, and let her go, and she'll start picking it up.

My 11-year old has scrapped her own birthday invitations for the last few years. I think if I let her have more time on the computer she'd scrap a lot more.

She's learning PS pretty well. My dh is a photographer and he told her once she learns PS, he'll hire her to do some of the grunt work he doesn't enjoy It's a pretty good incentive!

My 10 year old has been digi scrapping...when she feels like it, for about two years. She does not like templates though. As kids they usually have more fun I find with their own creativity. My daughter loves to extract pics and make little scenes of herself with everything, it is adorable actually lol

I LOVE this thread. My daughters are 7 and did some basic digi scrapping when I had the Creative Memories Storybook Software. My computer crashed and now I have a Mac with CS5 and I can hardly figure out it out myself let alone teach them! They often ask if I can get my old software back. It was much more intuitive and user friendly and a 7 year old could handle it pretty well.

In fact, they once made invitations to a Kentucky Derby Party and handed them out at school. Imagine my surprise when I got an RSVP from another Mom!

I'd love to get them scrapping! Maybe I should try and teach them with a template!

I've been teaching my daughter, who is 7 how to scrap! she LOVES it and is always begging me to teach her more, which is both good and bad, LOL.

What we do:
  • I have PS8 for her on an old laptop. she knows how to open it up.
  • I open an explorer window with pictures and have her select the photos she wants to use
  • I then show her all my kit previews and let her pick the kit she wants to use
  • then I open the kit folder, and she knows how to drag and drop all the papers and elements she wants to use.
  • She knows how to re-size and move them around on the page, too.
  • She even knows how to put shadow layer styles on each item, LOL!

She love it - and I love seeing what she creates

Kjersti - I LOVE your dd's pages!! they're awesome!!

I've let my son (who is 8 now, but this started when he was like 6) play with photoshop. He doesn't really scrap, but he LOVES taking the elements and arranging them on a background. He likes elements like animals, trains, cars, etc. Basically he plays with them like digital colorforms. LOL
