Default What happened to Digiland?

Okay, I've been very much out of the loop for a couple of years now. I used to keep up on all the latest and participate in galleries, forums, challenges, etc... but I haven't scrapped forever. I come to this store and a couple of others when I need stuff for cards or my blog or whatever, but I really want to get back into it and see what's new and get in on the forums, so I went on DST and MSA today, and they seem kind of... dead? The forums anyway. Only a few posts per DAY when it seems like there used to be constant activity.... is there a new "place" to go or is all the action here in the individual store communities/ forums?

WELCOME back to digiland and I do think that most of hte chatter is in the individual store forums now...I think DST just got to overwhelming and LOTS of people left...they still have an open gallery that everyone can post too, but other than that I am not sure what goes on over there LOL!

I've only ever been involved here at at TDC. I don't keep up with the others at all.

So how do you find out about new designers and stores and stuff?

I think most of us have just found designers that we really like by seeign LO's in the galleries and other than that, I don't really look for a designer {I do the majority of my shopping here {...and if you do the monthly challenges here you can earn points and then get a % discount the next month! you could probably find a majority of the designer population in the gallery at DST or MSA, since they have open galleries....are you looking for anything in particular?

If I'm remembering correctly a lot of people left DST's forum when the new owners took over. Plus there was some drama or something.
I don't know about MSA. I've never really hung out over there.

Are you on facebook at all? There is a lot of activity on there. A lot of my facebook friends are actually digiscrap friends, and many will post about their favorite designers, or post their most recent layouts, etc. Most designers have fan pages on there, so you can keep up with their new releases and information there, too.

Thanks gals!

I wondered if there was drama or something, or if the communities just kind of fizzled out a bit. Do any of you post in the open galleries, where's the best one to go for inspiration?

Also has anyone created a good place or way to just do general searches for digital scrapbooking supplies? I still use digi supplies here and there even though I haven't been scrapping or in the communities at all. I deck out my blog and create cards and things, but I used to check DST's product gallery when I needed something in particular and I would find new designers to like that way, but that's not good anymore, so I just end up going to each of my favorite stores and searching there, it's just so time consuming!

I do have a couple of designers and sites that I follow on FB, Dani is one of my favorites so I often look here if I need something. Back in the early days of digi, I tried having a digi "home" a couple of times, but I really liked the faster pace of the big forums and having a place to go to hear about new trends, stores, and designers. I should try a smaller community again, it would probably not be so much of a time suck (which was a big reason I stopped all the digi stuff I was just wasting a lot of time with it not even scrapping!)

Thanks for the tips about the challenges here. I will look into those for sure. Sweet Shoppe has always been one of my favorite stores, everything is good quality here! I also think it would be fun to get my gallery going again and maybe try for some CT's so they can keep me moving and getting LO's done.

I don't think there is anywhere like that anymore. I do know that Me So Scrappy goes once a week and checks out all the different stores and posts their favorite stuff from each store. But you can't search through just that.

The gallery here is amazing, our store CT (SugarBabes) gallery is full of great inspiration -https://www.sweetshoppecommunity.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=516

I am also a fan of The Daily Digi blog for great ideas and inspiration.

Facebook has really overtaken what DST used to be able to do. DST died long before the new owners...and nothing quite took it's place. 2peas is becoming more active again, but it's not geared to 'other' places. It's more general digital, techniques, etc., but no other digital shopping other than themselves.

I started out at DST, and it seemed so impersonal. I was glad to find other digihomes that were more friendly and intimate. I think SSD is pretty busy, though! We all seem to chatter a lot!

Wow, I feel lucky to have missed all the drama. I started digital scrapbooking a few years ago, but due to work commitments at the time, I didn't really do very much and definitely didn't follow the scrapbooking sites or forums. I really just got back into digital scrapbooking just a few months ago.

I think SSD has an awesome gallery. SSD fits my scrapbooking style the best. There's actually a variety of styles here and I love that the designers here are so different from each other, yet work together so well. I have discovered other designers here due to collaborations that the SSD designers occasionally do with artists from other shops or who are independent. Also, I'll discover new artists when I look through the gallery and see an SSD designer's creation with a non-SSD template or an SSD template with another artist's elements and papers. At the end of the day, SSD is my favorite shop and if and when I do shop elsewhere, I like to find papers, elements or templates that are compatible.

What I really love about it here is that the designers are soooo responsive. If someone asks for a themed kit, the designers here really do respond. (A bunch of us asked for a Desert Southwest kit a couple months ago and Eva, Meghan and Misty created a breathtaking set of papers, elements and alphas not long afterwards.) So if it isn't in the shop, they will make it happen if they can.

Also, the forums here are so active and helpful!

DST has changed a lot. I used to like it there because it had all the news and trends of digiscrapping in general but it's true that it became very sour with all the drama! I still miss the way it was over there in my early days though.
I like hanging out here at SSD now, I think this must be the most chatty forum of all digistore forums!

I am primarily here, as well. The other sites I hang out at (participate in challenges, or I'm on a CT for them) don't chat as much, which is fine. I love to chat here and I learn a lot from here, so I spend most of my time here, but each site that I spend time at has it's awesome perks!

Welcome back to digi! You are sure to feel welcome and inspired here at SSD, and we'd love to see you jump in and let us get to know you!

Like others have mentioned, Facebook is a great way to keep up with what your favorite designers are up to. Have fun!

Welcome back to digi...

I'm also a fan of the daily digi which does highlight different designers every month. Also their funtastic friday has introduced me to some designers.

Me So Scrappy has blog and open gallery. I love that it i forum free. They hilight a different designer each week

Log Your Memory is also another open gallery and the forum is not very active. She also higlights a new designer each month and an annual log book filled with challenges

Welcome back!

I agree with the love of having one home, and keeping up to date with the designers I love.

I'm one of those that has my designers, my blogs I read, and my places I call home.

With running a store and taking care of a one year old I just wouldn't have time to deal with the drama of a big community. I love ssd for that reason, we are full of ladies and full of fun... and they are always welcoming to anyone. Besides they always take me back in every time I run away!!! I always disappear for weeks or months then come back.

I just feel most of use know our designers and know our stores then keep up with all our favorites through facebook. No real need for places like dst/msa that are open. Sometimes I feel the fill up with people who just throw layouts up, new designers that I'm sometimes not interested in, and of course drama. I'm always shorter on cash and I know I want to spend my money places that are well established and with designers that are established as well. Thats just my personal preference.

I also like it here because when I'm searching for a kit or when others are searching for a kit for a photo or a theme, people suggest kits that actually complement the photo or the theme. Sometimes on those big sites, if someone posts an In Search of query, people suggest kits that have NOTHING to do with the photo or theme whatsoever.

Welcome Back!!!

I took a four-year-long "break" and returned just earlier this summer to find DST completely changed, management changing at sites, magazines shut down, and many of my favorite designers no longer even designing. It was a little overwhelming to start all over again and get my bearings, but SSD has really helped. I picked a few designers that I knew from before and loved (all are here), started participating in the Portfolio Challenges, finding new designers, and the Sweet Rewards program has really helped my budget.

Welcome back to digi! I wanted to mention that Me So Scrappy is an open gallery so there are a lot of wonderful layouts with links to the designers store/stores. You should browse and get some inspiration, while your there, read the blog!

Welcome back!
One place that has come about is The Daily Digi. They have a kit called The Digi Files (SSD's have been on there and is always a must) for $5 and you can try out some new designers on the cheap that way. They have tutorials and other info as well. So I check there and here and FB and that is about it. I think in general the digiworld got too overwhelming to keep up!

I have followed The Daily Digi from the beginning actually. I've kept up with a few blogs here and there. It changed for me when Janet left and then when it became a subscription I kind of lost interest a bit. I used to buy it a lot of the months when it was $5 and I liked what I was seeing on the features, but I didn't always buy it so for me the membership wouldn't really work. Bummer though because I'm loving Fee and Zoe's contributions to this one.

Thanks again ladies. You have all been so welcoming and helpful. Now I just gotta get my butt scrapping (oh wait, after I clean my kitchen, lol!)

AMEN to liking it better now. DRAMA free zone and loving it I just know for me I found my "niche" and here is where I stay. And really I'm finding that even if I were not a babe I would not scrap with products anywhere besides SSD..with the exception of Kay Miller. I just realized this is where I belong and what I like to scrap with so I just gravitated here and eventually stopped going anywhere else, lol.

Like everyone else, I love SSD. Even though I am definitely not active, I check the message boards daily, and I love the designers here: they get quite a bit of my scrapping budget. For me, it's been enlightening to read that people basically follow the designers' facebook fan pages. Duh, I have been wondering how everyone keeps up with their favorite designers. I still find it overwhelming to have all of that information on my facebook stuff, but then, I am not a huge user of facebook.

Another two sites similar to The Daily Digi, in terms of letting you try out new-to-you designers at low to no-cost, are digiscrapaddicts and 5stardigitalscrapbooking. Also, as you probably know, MSA has a free kit each month. I also think that SSD and/or its designers have been featured on other websites, but I can't remember what particular ones.

You don't have to buy the subscription. You can buy individual TDF's still for the $5. I'm like you, I don't need every new thing that comes out so the subscription wasn't what I wanted. I miss Janet too there. Know she's uber busy with her kiddos and life so I understand, but I "miss" her voice there too. Glad she still sells her templates here!

Welcome back! I really think much of the forum activity from those "big boards" is now more focused on smaller communities like store forums--well, I've always noticed SSD's forum is hopping Also, I think designers find it easier to touch base with people on Facebook and Twitter

I still go to DST sometimes...if I want to see a magical horse with a baby photoshopped onto the the scene like it's riding bareback through a forest full of fairies and mushrooms

(oh jeez, was that mean??)

Despite my snarky comment, I too prefer to drama free zones of the local store forums like SSD here I think it's been a great change!

Where is everyone "hanging out" on facebook though? I don't have any scrapbooking connections through facebook...Do you guys like/fan designers? Or are you "friending" fellow scrappers?

Bahahaha, the fantasy scrapbookers did kind of take over DST.

I guess I'm in the minority because I actually miss DST, at least the DST it was in the early days.

Yes, there was occasionally drama but having an open forum and gallery added a lot of balance and variety to the digi community that I think we've lost a bit of now that everyone is back to store forums. Don't get me wrong, it's nice to have a digi "home" but I also miss having easy access to a wider variety of styles and ideas. I think it was good for the industry as a whole to have one place where everyone came together. It pushed everyone to be better.

It's sad but in a way DST became a victim of it's own success. It became too big for people to keep up with or feel connected to and then all the slowness issues didn't help either. Then Shannon abandoned the site and eventually they sold it and that was kind of the end. It'd be nice if there was a central site again but I don't know that anyone really wants to take that on at this point given all the problems that came up at DST.

I agree it would be nice to have a all-around place. Sometimes I'm looking for something specific and I don't really care whether it's SSD or not as long as it works.

That said, I don't think I could really hang out in more than one place, so the current situation is fine with me. Friending designers on FB and subscribing to newsletters from other stores kind of covers my (not very pronounced) non-SSD needs.

I never went to other places, so I don't know about the drama, but I used to be part of other drama-plagued communities (fanfiction, predominantly) and I. Don't. Miss. It. We don't always agree here, but we can discuss things instead of arguing and calling each other names.

Wub SSD.

What I didn't like about DST was having to sort through all the stuff I didn't like (including fantasy LOs!). ALso, even in the new release section, there was so much sub-par stuff posted that I got tired sorting through the junk to find the good stuff.

However, I do feel completely disconnected. I somehow missed the transition to FB! I guess because I'm only one one team, which is also "independent", that it just passed me by!

Krystal - thank you for the links! Can I ask a dumb question (to all of you)...

I always took "FRIEND" to mean "FRIEND"...as in, hey, we mutually enjoy each other's company . But now, is everyone in the digi community pretty much "hooking up" through FB as a way of staying in touch/connected? Like, are conversations taking place there? or just posting about new releases/CT layouts and stuff? (thanks!!)

I'm also wondering about the FB stuff. I'd love to be involved.

And Becky, you summed it up perfectly for me. Even when DST was in its heyday, I still looked at the individual stores for new releases because there was a lot of junk on DST that it was hard to see all the good stuff.

I used to shop at 5 stores but the other 4 went downhill or completely to fantasy. Now I pretty much only shop here and buy templates from Kay and Lynette.

See this is how I feel too - disconnected from the larger community. In a way it reminds me a lot of the early digi days back when everyone had to speak in code at 2Peas, haha. Because while store forums are nice for the community aspect, you aren't really allowed to talk about outside products or sites at most of them. That's why DST got started in the first place.

As far as FB, maybe I'm just not on it often enough, but I don't know that I agree it's a replacement for DST. Yes, there are tons of scrapbookers on there but I rarely see products or layouts in my feed - it's usually more personal updates. I know I haven't found out about any new designers or sites that way. If anything, I think blogs have somewhat filled the DST void, like Gallery Standouts or the Daily Digi but it's still not really the same.

I totally agree about the fantasy scrapbookers taking over DST, lol. I miss the old DST as well. It used to be a lot of fun, I remember joining DST right after it opened and we were all so happy to not have to talk in code, it was the mass exodus from two peas for digi freedom! I remember going in the galleries and seeing gorgeous layouts and knowing half the people who posted layouts there.

I was not in digi-land for that much for a few years until this spring I started getting into it more and coming here, cause I was looking for a cozy, little community. I really don't look at hardly anything at DST anymore, it's not the same people hanging out there. I loved when Shannon and Eric owned it! It's never felt the same to me since it starting changing ownership after them.

I know a few people have mentioned it already, but I just wanted to add a little note about Me So Scrappy. If you want to see all the New Release highlights for the past several weeks, you can go to the main blog site, then on the right hand side choose "This Week We Love" and it will show all of the recent posts!

There is bound to be something new and different for you there, we try to choose a real variety of products!

(oh jeez, was that mean??)
i giggled. a lot. i'm glad i'm not the only one who likes scrapbook pages that LOOK like scrapbook pages. sure, if you can pull off the fantasy stuff? whatever. not me. i like pages that look like they belong in a scrapbook.

the only reason i post at DST is because i know people look at the gallery. and because i'm a creative chick at TDC. i also post my designer stuff in their product gallery. but not as much as i would have hoped.

when it comes down to it, SSD has been home to me for like, 3 years (: and probably 85% of my stash is from here.
