Book suggestions for a 9 year old?
My dd is searching for a new set of books to read. I think she's out-growing a lot of the younger series but I'm not allowing her to read The Hunger Games and such. She wants to read these grown-up books, but the ones she keeps showing me are definitely for teens, all boy/girl stuff or topics that are too heavy for her.
She's basically scoffing at all my suggestions and then I have to turn down all HER suggestions. ARGH! Ideas please???

Hmm perhaps some of the Judy Blume books?
I just finished prereading The Puzzling World of Winston Breen and thought it was a good mystery/adventure book, yet contained nothing really heavy. It would be especially good if she likes puzzles. The Mysterious Benedict Society is good. I'm starting through the 39 Clues series with my son. They are big on adventure and history and so far light on romance. Oh and the Ranger's Apprentice series is good too. There's lots of adventure and a touch of romance in the later books (but very 'clean'). Last edited by Misty Cato; 05-21-2012 at 06:57 PM.

Everything below I believe is age appropriate I have read all of these except the Warriors which is about cats so I'm assuming it's ok for 9 year olds.
What about the Warriors series by Erin Hunter? My niece loves them! Has she read Fablehaven by Brandon Mull? Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan? Or the Lost Heroes? The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan? Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume Fitzhugh, Louise. Harriet the Spy Konigsburg, E. L. From the mixed up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler The Avi books are awesome too. The characters are animals my son loved them at that age. Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins (this is the author of the HUnger Games series - this is geared towards a younger audience.)

My 9 year old sister really loved the Chronicles of Narnia series. It's a great classic.

My DD is 10 and she is currently reading the Harry Potter books.
We also have several from The Lily Series by Nancy Rue (they're Christian books, but definitely a good read!) She likes the Judy Blume books as well. And she's asked about The Hunger Games, to which I said no.

a few of my personal favorites:
The Penderwicks When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead Anything by Kate DiCamillo I assume she's read The American Girls, maybe she would like the History Mysteries from the AG company? Anne of Green Gables, tho it might be too hard for a 9yo, i don't know.

what about LIttle House on the Prarie books? I loved them at that age. Or Little Women. I read that at about 8 or so too.
My daughter read Harry Potter at 9ish and she loved it (it was 3rd grade so Im thinking she was around 8 or 9) Last edited by jessica31876; 05-21-2012 at 07:50 PM.

LHOTP is one series that she thinks she's done with. Poo! I STILL love reading them. I think Anne of Green Gables might be a little too word intensive for her, but I might push her to read them later.
Gosh, I love reading and I'm so proud of the novels I read as a kid (all the Little House, Narnia, Anne of Green Gables, Judy Blume and ALLLLL the Romana books, Little Women, etc) What sucks is that the kids these days don't seem interested. Maybe the vocabulary is more complex than than most of the 'popular' reads these days? We're hittin' the library tomorrow (Tuesdays are our library days) and I'm going to search down a bunch of these. I'm really VERY grateful for the suggestions. I can always count on my SSD girls!

I am thinking of some others. My son liked one with an owl on the front. I cant remember what it was called. It is a series. Maybe to young for her though. Ill have to ask him what that series is called.
Superfudge was always a favorite of mine. I also loved Freckle Juice, How to Eat Fried Worms and ohhh Encyclopedia Brown. And do you remember those choose your own tale books where you read the book and it would say at the end of the page do this turn to this page or if you do this turn to this page. I used to love those too. Shel Silverstein was a favorite too. They are shorter poems and stories and really engaging illustrations. I loved the Boxcar Children as well. I read all the Nancy Drew books. My daughter would not read any of these either.

I looked up Legend of the Guardians it looks like six books for ages 9 and up and the Eragon series it says 12 and up. It is really long though. I asked my son about both series and he said neither have anything to graphic or boy/girl stuff. More fantasy/mystical stuff.
Another suggestion my boys loved is getting books to learn about their favorite things. For my middle son it was dinosaurs, bears, wolves and big cats (lion/tiger/panther/leopard). My younger son liked cars and Egypt. He was fascinated with King Tut and the pyramids. So maybe she might like some non-fiction as well?

My daughter was not much of reader until she started reading the Warrior series by Erin Hunter. She loved them and has read them all but the most recent one. She went on to read the Percy Jackson series too. Recommend them both =)

My son(8) is reading the Borrower series(tie in Arriety movie)
He also like Gregor Chronicles and is reading the Harry Potter series. I second Little House on the Prairie books. Also 39 Clues.

I wish I was more help! I've always been a huge reader, but by the time I was 11 I was reading Stephen King. I'd raid my mom's bookshelves for anything that looked interesting. I'm sure I read some stuff I shouldn't have, but I couldn't stop reading LOL. I read anything I could get my hands on, and that meant my mom's collection
 I can't remember what all would be age appropriate. Of course, I also read all the babysitter's club, and sweet valley high, and stuff like that too as a kid. There's one book, I remember loving that I read over and over called Silver... Forget who wrote it, and don't remember if it'd be good for a 9 yr old... I also tore through Christopher Pike and R.L. Stine as a kid, but not sure if those are appropriate either.

Ok, we're at the library and we're going to try out the Borrowers and I found an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables that's for younger readers! Yay! It looks less wordy and I think she's going to really like it. She also found a novel called Sparrow Road that looks promising.

Boxcar Children, Baby Sitters Club, Little House on the Prairie, Little Women, The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, Magic Tree House, Narnia, are all some of my favorite books from that time frame.

I'm keeping an eye on this thread. My 9 year old has read a LOT of these but there are a few I haven't heard of so I'm not sure if she has read them or not. She reads all the time and I can't keep up with what she has and had not read. I won't let her read Hunger Games either but she does read some books with slightly older content... not really YA yet though, other than Harry Potter.

How about the Redwall Series? Animal stories with a fantasy setting and there's a bunch of them. I haven't actually read them myself but my husband loves them and they were extremely popular a few years back when I worked in a children's library. They were constantly circulating.

While not a series, my DD is currently reading Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh and is loving it! It took some cajoling to get her to try it, but now she's faithfully working through the chapters.
Once she's done, we'll find the movie for her to watch (The Secret of Nimh). You might also try A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. I believe there are 4 books in that series. Natalie's still into the Judy Moody series- nine books in that one! I seem to recall a book "The Wind in the Willows"? We might also get her to try The Hobbit this summer. Good luck!

I'm definitely bookmarking this thread for reading suggestions!
My son likes Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, 39 Clues, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Geronimo Stilton, Thea Stilton. We're kind of Magic Treehouse max'ed out. I guess I shouldn't have bought the box set from Scholastic, lol. For animals, have you tried Black Beauty, or War Horse? I'm going to check out Lemony Snicket for my son next.

This has turned out to be very resourceful! My ds (13) just read all the Wrinkle in Time books in a row, just ate them up. Also The Hobbit. I haven't thought of Black Beauty... duh. Haven't heard of the Redwall series but I'll look them up.

Ooooh I second (or third or fourth..lost count) Madeleine L'Engle's time quartet...I also love, love, love the Austin family books by her. I always loved how she intertwined characters from her different stories. I've long considered L'Engle my favorite author.

If you are interested in dystopian fiction, Margaret Peterson Haddix's books might be good as well. There is definitely some stuff to think about in them but maybe not quite as rough as the Hunger Games trilogy. The Shadow Children may be a good place to start.
