Scanning service
Quite some time ago there was a thread about a company that you can send a whole envelope or box of photos to and they will scan them for a set price. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I just got an e-mail from Shutterfly about ScanCafe, which I guess is partnering with Shutterfly.

Does it make you nervous sending your photos in the mail... what if they get lost?

Laura, when I sent mine in, I did the tracking thing with USPS. Not that it works all that great all the time, but it made me feel better. And when it was sent back to me, they did the same thing. So I knew mostly where the pictures were the whole time.

This would give me SO much more to scrap if I did this. LOL I have about 2 years of pics that I could scrap if they weren't on paper. Plus, my mother has a whole big box full of old family photos that we definitely need to get scanned.
It would be really nice to have all your photos scanned onto DVDs or something like that and then put in a safety deposit box or in case there was a fire or something.

Yeah I would LOVE to try something like this! Lily's photos are all prints, we didn't havea digital camera then and I never really get to scrap her baby pictures! That would be so wonderful for me! Now is there a huge difference between having them professionaly scanned and scanning them at home? Is the quality better overall?

Laura, they send you back a DVD with all the prints that were scanned, on it.
Plus you can order multiple DVD's to save them too. The only downside to that is that it's all random and unorganized. So I copied everything off the DVD into folders I made (vacations, Me, My sister, my brother, family, friends, etc) and then made new DVD's with everything organized into the folders. I did all sorts of pics from my moms photo boxes from when I was a baby on up. I plan to take some time in the coming months to do even more, cuz I didn't get to A LOT of her boxes, lol. Sarah, when you scan at home you can have issues with dust spots and such showing up on dark areas of the photos. I didn't have a single problem like that, and I had a LOT of dark photos (like pro shots with the black velvet background type - not a single dust spot to be found). Plus, who the heck wants to sit down and scan thousands of photos? Not me! LOL! I think I sent in over 600, and my prepaid box wasn't even full. You can get like 1800 if you REALLY pack it in. Totally worth saving me the time and frustration (not to mention the fact that I don't have a scanner, LOL!)/

I worry about the shipping thing. A lot of the photos I have are old, one-of-a-kind photos and I'd worry that they could get lost in the mail. Scanmyphotos specifically says it won't take any responsibility for photos lost in shipping and ScanCafe will pay you $1000 if your photos are lost, but then they ship them to India to be processed (and I wonder if scanmyphotos does that too).

Scanmyphotos is in Cali, Dawn.
I look at it this way. Yes, if the box of photos were lost, you'd be losing them. But they're just sitting in a box in your closet or basement or something right now. You're not looking at them, they aren't displayed, etc etc. So what's the difference? I sent out a LOT of one of a kind photos. Baby photos of me that there was only 1 of. If you add tracking and insurance to the package, it helps ensure it gets there. My mom wouldn't let me send the OLD photos of my Dad when he was a baby, and I understand that. But next time, she says they can go since we got the first box back without any problems.

I'd love to do this but all the photos of my childhood are "safely" stored in magnetic albums. I wish they were just in a box.
I do think I might look into the negative scanning for pics I took of my oldest before we had a digi camera. I would love to have them scanned.
