Well, I"m not technically a teacher, but I am a school nurse and my SSD social life has GREATLY suffered due to the start of the school year.

But I'm still here and I miss being such an active part of this community!

XOXOXOX

Oh Kelly that would rock honey LOL! So Lily gets a packet of homework from her first grade teacher every monday. It has 4 sheets and we can choose the pace as far as doing all in one night or one a night until Thursday. (Its due on Friday) Then she has another sheet every night (mon-thurs) from her reading helper and a book report she gets on Wednesdays due the following Wednesdays so she gets super frustrated. its not unlike her to spend over an hour on homework or more a night. I digress, I tend to ramble sorry LOL. So most of her homework has been math. Just greater and less then or parts and whole and all that but she got this phonics one from her reg 1st grade teacher and its about consonant vowels and consonant vowel consanants. Theres a bunch of little words at the bottom of the work sheets shes supposed to label one or the other. I have no freakin clue what it is LOL I even googled and just read and seriously my brain was hurting LOL.

Believe me, I wouldn't know my 6th grade English if I didn't teach it. Honestly I don't remember doing half the stuff kids today do when I was in middle school!

On lunch, I always check in. I'm so SSD addicted. LOL

I feel so removed now that school has started!! I check in here a ton though, and I bust to do the challenges, but I miss checking in every hour like I did all summer.

Hey, I teach 6th grade math too!! Any help I can be, let me know! Samara, what are your students working on?

Ok, I think I get this. They are wanting to know whether she can tell the difference between consonants and vowels.

So, if the word is : milk, you would put cvcc because i is the vowel. If it is food, then you would put cvvc. for consonent, vowel, vowel, consonent.

I think that's what they are talking about, without seeing the worksheet.

Does that help?

Sarah, I just saw this.. sorry so late in responding. I'm nicer with my homework *lol* I give it to my kids on Friday and they have until the following Friday to turn it in. Easier on them and me.. enough about that. Also wanted to say that it shouldn't take a first grader more than 20 minutes to do their homework and the amount of homework given shouldn't take longer than that. IMO, homeowork is review/practice of what has been learned and should never be new information to the child. If she is frustrated with her homework because she is not understanding it, then I think you should let the teacher know. If she is frustrated because she doesn't want to do it (I have MANY kiddos like this) then have her take a mini break and come back to it. Fighting over homework will only worsen the situation and frustrate not only her but you too. Teacher lecture over *lol*

Okay, the phonics homework sounds like she just needs to choose what pattern the words are following.. is the word a vowel-consonant-vowel word, etc. What words are at the bottom of the sheet? I'm sure you know this but AEIOU and sometimes Y are vowels and everything else is a consonant. PM if you need more help.. I like to help where I can.
