how do kids hone in on that one little detail?
conversation with my 8yo son tonight:
(8yo is reading a science book) 8yo: what's a sperm? me: well....it's the part of a Daddy that helps make a baby 8yo: Daddy helps make the babies??? me: Dude, did you think you were just mine? All of you are part Daddy and part me. 8yo: oh wow. 8yo: So what part comes from the mommy. me: the egg. The sperm of the Daddy and the egg from the mommy combine to make a baby. 8yo: wow. So how does the sperm get out of the Daddy? me: (dodging and weaving) Here's a science book! Look at these pictures of embryos and babies! Isn't this neat????? They grow in the mommy's tummy and then they are born. 8yo: wow. So how does the sperm get out of the Daddy? me: (desperately dodging and weaving) It's kind of complicated.... 8yo: you mean you don't KNOW???? This is me assuring 8yo that after 4 kids yes I do know. Daddy walks into room to be railroaded by "how does your sperm get out" question....ahem, isn't it bedtime (for the 8yo!) yet????????

LMAO...I would be desperately dodging and weaving too. Mason is 6 and figuring out that girls and boys have different parts (like girls have boobs and boys just have nipples)...the other day he asked if I had armpits, and I said no (thinking that he wanted to tickle them)...so he's like "OK, well...boys have armpits, so what do girls have?". Oops.

You know - it was totally because he was reading that biology book that this came up - he has no idea what he is asking....
I am going to order a book from amazon to have ready for the next time....I swear when I was a kid I didn't know the details to THAT detail until I was like 13...

OMG!! This is hilarious!! I have dodged this question so far. The worst I've gotten was from my 5 yr. old asking how the baby was going to get out of my tummy when I was pregnant with Avery. "Well, mommy has a special door that the baby comes out of." Thankfully, he didn't take it any further!!

I do NOT look forward to these conversations! But honestly, my mom filled me in on the facts of life when I was 6 (because she hit puberty at 8 and wanted me to know what was what). She was really open about things...and then of course I puberty at 8 as well, and did NOT want to talk to her about anything! Maybe Rachel and I can hit a point where we both are comfortable talking about things...I hope!

ACK!!! LOLOLOL
When Connor and I had this conversation a few weeks ago (when he likened the joining of Mom & Dad to legos), this was the one question I feared .... and thankfully, he never went there. It would've been the first time I ever said, "You'll have to ask your father." LOLOL Poor Emmy! |

OMG! That's hysterical and frightening all in one moment Thankfully, that conversation has not come up in our house - my boys are 9 1/2 and 8. Dan is rueing the day when he's going to have to have "The Talk" with Geary.

I was having a similar discussion with 2nd son once and I told him that all the mommy's eggs don't become babies. He asked me if I had ever laid a bad egg =) You couldn't pay somebody to come up with this stuff !!

The part that set me off was picturing my husband walking into a room for one of the kids to ask him how his sperm gets out.

Oh and I told my oldest I had a special opening for the baby to come out (he was 3 1/2). Then we were at Babies R Us and he told some lady "My mommy has a baby in her tummy and she has a special opening where they baby can come out." KTHXINFO STFU.
