My sis' little one is a month old. She hasn't gone #2 in over 24 hours now. Can my sis use a suppository on her? They tried stimulating by taking her temp down there but hasn't helped.

Is she breastfed or formula fed? I know formula can cause some serious constipation. I *think* from what I've heard, there's no reason to worry unless it's been 3 days or more.

Try water and brown sugar mixed together - always worked on my babies (and they still have problems to this day!)
In an 8oz. bottle of water, I would add a tablespoon of brown sugar and mix it up. Poor little thing! |

She is primarily breastfed. I think my sis does give her some formula once in a while. I was able to reach my friend who's a nurse and she said the glycerine suppositories are okay but if the problem continues she should take her to the doctor.
Thanks for responding. It's been a little while since mine had that problem... ![]() |

hey Kat, tell her to try some infant massage - it always worked for all four of mine.

My dd was the queen of constipation when she was tiny. We used the glycerine suppositories (only 1/2) and one other thing that worked was putting a tiny bit of Karo syrup in her bottle. I hope the poor baby feels better soon!

Our pediatrician told me that a newborn can safely go up to 3 days without pooing because, especially breasfed babies, the nutrition is completely obsorbed in their little systems. Both my girls were breastfed babies and Regan would go sometimes 2 days before we'd get a mustard diaper. lol I bet she's fine.

we used suppositories on both my babies when they were under a month (at the direction of our pediatrition) - we just had to make them a little smaller.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry until 3 days either, that's what I've always been told.

I wouldn't worry until it's been a few days- unless she's really gassy.... she's a year old?... you can always give her some apple juice. Add a little water so it isn't so strong, though...

Seth would not go for up to 10 days. Our ped told us 7 was ok. And even at 10 his ped wasnt worried. And he always ended up going.
Have her call the ped. I wouldnt want to try anything until it was absolutely necessary. Breastfed babies dont have as much waste to get rid of as we do or as formula babies do. So not going for days is totally normal. |

I wouldn't worry either until at least 3 days. I haven't had any trouble with DD yet but with DS anytime he'd get constipated I'd mix a tiny bit of karo syrup in his bottle and it worked every time. My doc suggested it.

My doctor was fine with Phin doing his usual once every 10 days act... up to 10 days is FINE. Seriously, it's okay... 24 hours is nothing compared to my little dude. Some babies digestive system is just a little slower than others, nothing to worry about at all.

I dont' know whats been said, but I wouldn't use a supository w/o talking to the doc first. Try water and dark Karo syrup. Works like a charm. Good luck.

Just adding to what has already been said, but my son went 4 days one time when he was about that age, and I of course freaked out a little, but my doctor said it was quite normal, and sure enough, the next day it all came out! A lot, but he was fine. I guess their little systems just need a little getting used to.

Ok so the REASON breastfed babies start not pooing so often at about 4 to 6 weeks old is because this is when the colustrum is completely gone from the milk and they have to actually start pushing/working to get the poo out. Yes they are grumpy for a couple of days as they get used to this, but it is totally normal (and yes I freaked out when DS#1 did this and I swore he went every time I fed him up until he was 6 weeks old to the day and then bam, nothing for three days!).
The wonderful days of poop analysis!! LOL only other mommies and daddies could appreciate it! |

ummm. yeah.
I'll see your blowout and raise you with my own. He'd only have blowouts whenever we were going somewhere. I've gone through 4 carseat liners... they were completely beyond scrubbing girls... they were- well... they were just gone. RIP carseat liners. Try taking her for a drive. Watch the poop up the back magic happen.
