Default Note to Idiotic Pharmacy

1.5 cc does not equal 1.5 tsp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I took Isabella to the ped this morning because she can't kick her cold. The ped prescribed her some antibiotics since it's been hanging on for so long and sent me downstairs to the pharmacy.

At the consult window the pharmacist specifically shows me twice how to measure 1.5 tsp with the syringe. I'm thinking, "I'm not a dingbat, I can measure." And then she says I'm going to dose that 3 times a day. A little light goes off in my head, but I've been there over an hour now and I'm ready to get home.

Then, when I get home I'm talking to DH about needing to give her the meds the next time I nurse her and he asks how much and again, I start thinking something isn't right. 1.5 tsp just seems like a lot for a little baby. Granted, she does weigh 15 lbs, but I don't think I even give JT (3 yo) that much.

So I call the ped's office and ask them to check the dosage. The nurse says, "Yes, that's right, she wants you to give her 1.5 cc ml." I say, "Well, my bottle here says 1.5 tsp and I'm pretty sure that's not the same." She says, "No it is not. Let me double check. Yep, Ped's orders say 1.5cc, so the pharmacy jacked it up."

I'm so glad I called! I'm so glad I paid attention! Geez I switching pharmacies.

uh.... WOW. Thats scary. I mean, the difference btwn 1.5cc and 1.5tsp is HUGE! And for a pharmacy to screw that up.... I think thats a big deal.

Did you call them? You need to if you didn't. If it was a pharmacy tech (which it probably was) then you need to tell the pharmacist or store manager about the mix up. If it was an actual pharmacist that did the mix-up, you might want to consider reporting the incident to the medical board.

Good eye, Mama! You saved the day!

Oh boy! I'd definitely make sure the pharmacy heard an earful about that, and I can't blame you for switching pharmacies!!!

The manager and/or head pharmacist definitely needs told.

We changed pharmacies after I was told by the person at the pharmacy counter that rather than buy a separate iron supplement (DS was anemic) that I could just give him three times the dose of the regular vitamin. I called the head pharmacist over and was told absolutely not to do that! (Some vitamins are harmful in over the 100% dose.)

Uh, yeah, I just called the pharmacy and I asked for the managing pharmacist. She's off today and the asst manager was at lunch. So I just told the pharmacist I was talking to, who had just rolled on, what happened. I explained the problem and he asked me to hold while he pulled up the hard copy. When he came back on he said he needed to call me right back. Ha!

2 minutes later a woman calls - I think it was the same pharmacist that did my consult. She apologized profusely for the mistake and said I'm only supposed to give her 1.5cc ml and told me to throw the other bottle. That was another thing, I thought it was a little weird that I needed two full bottles of antibiotics for a 10 day round for a little baby. She apologized again. I told her thank you. I'm pretty sure it was a tech that filled it because the label says "RPh: LAD/ Tech:KK"

actually it would be 7.5cc's but still..too much for a little one

and even if a tech fills it..the pharmacist is responsible for it and should always double check the tech's work (I used to work in a pharmacy during college)

Good thing you caught the Pharmacists mistake! My niece was given the wrong prescription a few years back and Thank God my sister happened to notice this....My sister called up the Pharmacist at the Drug store and chewed him out and then she lodged a complaint with the store....Needless to say, they offered them a settlement and asked her not to discuss it with anyone....Can you believe that? I would have been shouting it from the rooftop about their mistake!
