Default Mpix....

Have any of you ordered a photo book from Mpix? My photographer friend LOVES Mpix and from what I hear a lot of professional photogs print their stuff through them. I'm wondering if anyone has printed a photo book with them and was curious if they were really AMAZING quality. I know the book is pricey, but it's something I might want to save up for since I'm so picky about my prints.

I'm really surprised to hear this b/c "amazing" is not at all a word I would use to describe the photobooks (although I have ordered other products from them and been very happy).

After reading VERY mixed reviews about them online, I ordered a book from them b/c I had a 30% off coupon code. I figured that for the prices they were charging, the book would be awesome. Instead it was awful. I was so, so disappointed. The colors were dull and flat and some had reddish lines through them. Thankfully the customer service was very helpful and I got my reordered book fairly quickly. The reordered book was much better, but not "amazing" by any means.

The books I've printed through Blurb, MyPublisher, and Shutterfly, have been better quality than MPix. Even the photobook that I ordered from ArtsCow (which was not great quality, IMO) was better than the MPix photobook.

Have you seen any of your photographer's photobooks? Now I'm curious if I just had a fluke bad experience or what.

Awwww! That's too bad. And no, she hasn't ordered a photo book before... just stuff like prints and wraps. So, that's why I came to ask. haha

Oh, another thing I learned the hard way is that with their 19 cent prints, they absolutely refuse to reprint if you are unhappy with the color.

I got a batch of prints from them that were AWFUL. Not just bad - awful. I called customer service who was very snotty with me (I was surprised considering the great experience I had with the photo book customer service rep) and went into a big, long explanation about how they don't do reprints on the 19 cent prints and do not give refunds. She was obviously reading from a script and was not nice at all. In the end they wouldn't do anything at all other than suggest that I try placing another order with them (on MY dime) and see how they turned out. I don't think so!

I noticed that since then they put a bunch of disclaimers on the 19 cent print page, but after that experience I refuse to ever order from them again. Any company who won't back up their products (regardless of the price) is not a company that I want to work with.

wow I get my prints at walgreens or CVS and never have had a problem with them and they only charge 19cents a piece (so long as you order a certain amount...I think 50 prints) Id be willing to bet that if there was a problem either I would not have to pay or they would reprint

My BIL is a semi-professional photographer and very picky. He did one at Mpix and was happy with it, but not extremely happy with it over MyPublisher and Shutterfly. He did 3 in a couple of months for comparison.

My sister a semi-professional photographer has used them. But you have to note that she only has done prints, using their professional service with the lustre finish too. So the cheapies (19c) ones she has never tried, nor the photobooks.

Sorry can't be much more help than that, but I would bet that their books are printed on entirely different equipment than the prints and probably aren't any better than say Shutterfly who has really put a lot of effort into that part of the market.

I found out (the hard way) that you have to make sure you do not let them color correct your photos. There is a box somewhere in order options that you check and agree to. But I learned the same lesson with Shutterfly as well. LOL!

My friend is a professional photographer/graphic artist, and he uses mpix exclusively. I don't think he does the books though. I'd have to ask him.

I've heard excellent things about their printing from various pro and semi-pro photographer's reviews. However, I believe I read somewhere that their photo books are printed at a different facility and do not measure up to their print quality. Don't quote me on that, I could be wrong, but I seem to recall seeing that somewhere so I'd definitely investigate further before getting a book from them.
